The first major milestone was achieved yesterday when the boiler was lifted from the frames:

What is the Latest on SNG. There hasn’t been much on no.7. Is anyone willing to shed some light please?

Interesting times for locomotive owners. The report made by The Railway Magazine today sheds some light on the ten year arrangement. It's pretty much replacing Bittern for running on the mainline. Like for like.

It does beg the question on Bittern - she has a spare boiler (ex-Scotsman) as I recall. She hasn't gone straight in for overhaul and obviously the A2 will be out next. Her LSL home looks more permanent for the time being.

The boiler from 60007 should be ready for hydraulic testing in four weeks time if all goes according to plan in our works. The boilers from 4160 & 'Morayshire' are both also nearing completion.

It already seems to be happening. Several single-engine-owning groups are making some sort of arrangement with one of the principal main line operators. 6201 has formed a close link with Carnforth and 71000, 6880, 7027 and 4936 are likely to have a working relationship with Tyseley. As far as Saphos is concerned, a precedent in terms of using a third party loco was set by D213 last year.

I am using deliberately vague language here as the nature of the arrangements between individual loco owners and the operator will probably vary considerably and I certainly don't have any idea about the details of any of them. However, as a general principle, it makes common sense, especially as (according to the SR article), there is a certain flexibility in the tie-up between 60007 and Saphos - i.e., SNG can also visit heritage lines and may work trains for other operators. From what I remember, the proposals for 71000, when overhauled, don't tie it exclusively to Vintage Trains either.

If this is the way things are going, as long as the operator in question can provide sufficient work for the third party loco as well as its own then, to use the rather hackneyed phrase, it is a "win-win" for all concerned and a very sensible way of ensuring that we can continue to enjoy popular locos owned by a group with finite resources (such as 45596, 6201, 71000 and 60007) on the main line.

Think it shall be a more balanced approach for 60007.

Seems like a whole new way of life is emerging for owners of mainline steam. Exciting.

I think the days of the volunteer run owning groups maintaining a loco on the main line are coming to an end. It’s a huge commitment and if we look at the latest out of the box, 45596. The overhaul was partly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund but that won’t happen at the end of this boiler certificate. A partnership like 60007 is probably the way to go. MNLPS may be an exception with their regular Belmond work that’s doesnt take them too far from home and NELPG are in a similar position with the Jacobite but we will have to wait and see
