Most direct route via calder valley line has fallen out of favour despite having considerable investment in track signalling and clearance improvements.

I wouldn't think the line capacity has been reached, not by a long way. There has been no significant increase in services, but line capacity has been increased. For example the number of sections between milner royd junction and hebden bridge has increased three fold.
Perhaps it's down to the cost of having gauging done on the route? The long way round that is being used today has been utilised through the summer.

I seem to recall there have been other movements by the same roundabout route between York and the ELR. On the other hand, just the day before FS's move from the NRM to the ELR missed Leeds and was via Huddersfield (nicely caught by Fulwood Flyer) and the outskirts of Manchester (http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/O68317/2018/12/20/advanced) . Still not the most direct, but a lot shorter than via Carnforth.

DB are operating the Bill McAlpine memorial train next week (they're naming one of their locos). As they also, of course, own the Toton lathe, it makes sense for them to do the lot.

It's good to hear that profits from this train will be used to create a one-year engineering trainee position to ensure Sir William’s legacy continues to live on. <BJ>
