Certainly, if the entire UK preserved railway fleet were a single museum collection, there would be scope to "de-accession" a lot of items!

For me, the big worry is that most "railway" enthusiasts are really locomotive enthusiasts. Everybody always wants more locomotives but there is less willingness to invest in other areas which are equally essential. Far too many beautiful pre-1948 carriages, for example, are still rotting away in sidings while people invest in new-build schemes which, unless they can dramatically increase their rate of income, are never likely to come to fruition. This is not to say that there is no place for new builds, but I nevertheless fear that ultimately a lot of money will be thrown away on unsuccessful schemes, which could have been better spent elsewhere.

I think it's a mistake to assume that if new build loco project A was never launched, its supporters would have given their money to carriage project B.

Maybe. But then again, maybe if enough people start saying "actually, I think you're wasting your money on X project - have you considered donating to Y instead?", eventually the people who have money to donate will listen...!

Fair comment, but I don't think the folk who work on the carriages get nearly enough credit and acknowledgement. There's some super work being done at Didcot these days for all they get flak from some parties here about new build projects. Have you appreciated a carriage restorer today? Here's a beautifully restored seat, only another 99 to go...

Indeed - and there's no point in building an engine if you don't give people a place to sit behind it and enjoy it!

Not too sure if it is just me - but I'm slightly confused by the release today of the planned RTC tour itinerary for 2019 - in it they have 60009 supposedly down as a potential locomotive hauling railtours as late as August. I'm sure I had her down as being out of ticket by mid May/early June. Have I missed something somewhere where she has received an extension?

Ahem, coaches aside, what about all them troublesome trucks & brake vans folks love to phot & occasionally have a BV ride behind?...... ;)

But what the hell all this has to do with JC & 60009 is beyond me!

Not aimed at you - but is there any chance we can actually get back to JC & his loco's?........ :Nailbiting: As I for one would like to see No.9 one last time before she's plinthed....

No.9 in action this past week on Cathedrals Express duties. Filmed at South Marston and near Sapperton Tunnel. Also seen is 35028 on her run through the Chilterns today. I hope you enjoy the video! :)

My footage of No. 9 in dull conditions let's say. Filmed at Midgham and Hungerford. Also featuring Clan Line' run today.

My footage of No. 9 tackling the South Devon Banks possibly for the very last time. Filmed at Whiteball, Tigley and Hemerdon Loop in pitch darkness. She'll be sadly missed for sure. Enjoy.

I honestly don't know what you're apologising for. You were right, I was just confirming it. :)
