I’m exploring Google’s photo hosting facility. Free and unlimited but yet to discover if it images can be organised in the same way as Flickr. Will be a right pain to switch though as I have nigh on 5000 images on Flickr and that’s a lot to download, upload and organise all over again.

    Download ?

Please tell me you aren't using a third party hosting site as the only store of your digital images.

Just had a quick look at the Wikipedia entry after reading the broadcast 'news' on Flickr this morning, to remind myself of the recent changes in ownership, seemingly Verizon had no long term interest in Flickr and SmugMug have no intention of being as generous with free storage as Yahoo were - quick thumbnail calculation is that a maximum of 1000 free images is way below Yahoo's 1 Tb.

"On June 13, 2017, Verizon Communications acquired Yahoo!, including Flickr. In June 2017, Verizon reorganised Yahoo!, along with AOL, into a new umbrella company, Oath.

On April 20, 2018, SmugMug acquired Flickr from Verizon's Oath."

I'm not stupid. All my images are backed up twice on hard drives. I use Flickr as a way of hosting lo-res images to share on forums and Facebook. Many forums will not allow hosting on their sites but will allow sharing via such sites as Flickr*
    *Other hosting sites are available.

These photo hosts seem unreliable and untrustworthy, in that you can't be sure of long term stability and security. A change of owner can ruin everything. I've been through a few but, never used Flickr. Just make sure you keep your images on your computer and on a stick as backup.

All Flickr albums I view seem to have the photos in a totally random mixed up order. Is this because Flickr mess them up, or do users just not arrange their photos properly?

It's how the user chooses to organise. The main photostream will be in the order they're uploaded but I have created several albums, each by theme/subject matter, so I like to think they're far from random and mixed up.

Like a mate of mine who never backed up his wedding shots.

Plenty did exactly that with Fotopic, then got very upset when it collapsed with no warning. Losing captions and albums I can understand, but to rely on one website to store your photos is just barmy.

All of mine are backed up on external hard drives, usually with the RAW files on one and the edited JPGs on another, just in case.

Bit of a pain the subscription doubling in price from $25 to $50, but it's not a great deal in the grand scheme of things. It's only about £38, or less £30 with the 30% discount. It does make me chuckle that some people on other forums are getting so angry about it, yet think nothing of spending thousands on camera equipment or travelling to take photos.

I've got 2944 pics on Flickr. I certainly don't use it as a storage site - just a means of sharing pics with people with similar interests and to enjoy looking at their pics.

I moved to Flickr after Fotopic suddenly folded, but I'm not sure that I can be bothered again.

I've had a look a Google's facility but whilst it's unlimited and free, can find no way of categorising them in he same manner as Flickr nor can I find any analytical tools.
