SOUTHERN SUBURBAN VETERANS & WW1 Centenary

    With Guest Locomotives:
    0-6-0T LB&SCR A1X CLASS TERRIER 32678
This is the first time the Avon Valley Railway has hosted a Terrier and the first Southern Region engine to visit in the last 20 years. Could it be the first time a Terrier has come to Bristol? With thanks to our friends at the Kent & East Sussex Railway and the Terrier Trust for making this visit possible.

    2-4-0WT LSWR BEATTIE 30587
Another first for Bitton as a Beattie has never run on our metals. We extend our thanks to our friends at the Bodmin & Wenford Railway and the National Railway Museum for making this visit possible.

As well as our opertaional home fleet
    Hope to see you there

Er - no! For a period in the 1940s, St Philips Marsh shed had an allocation of two Terriers, used for local shunting duties ...

Funny as it was the AVR that said that. Interesting XD

There were two Terriers sold to the Weston, Clevedon and Portishead Railway - after that line closed, they were absorbed by the GWR and were stationed at St Philips Marsh for a while.

Good to know! I knew the GWR did have a Terrier or two but wasn't aware of where exactly they had been based! Would this be the first time one has been seen along our line though? Any records of a Terrier (or Beattie Well Tank for that matter!) making a trip between St Philips/Mangotsfield and Bath Green Park? Any information much appreciated!

I suspect unlikely. After the W,C&PR closed, the two locos went to Swindon for a period where they were overhauled. They both then went to St Philips Marsh and were used for shunting the docks. One was fairly soon laid aside; the other spent some years in Bristol, then went to Taunton and was used for shunting at Bridgwater; then went to Newton Abbot as shed pilot, before going back to Swindon where it was scrapped. I don't know the Bristol geography well enough, but Bristol - Bath via the LMS rose doesn't sound very likely I don't think.

A Beattie Well Tank - not a chance!

Both visiting engines arrived at the railway this morning, with the first opportunity to see either in action being this Sunday when 30587 with be used on the service train instead of the DMU!

Had a ride behind the Beattie WT today. It was excellent.

Families were excited to see a steam hauled train today as it replaced the diesel railcar. Such a shame that the railway didn't update their website to advertise the running of the Beattie or mention it in the Latest News section. If it had I'm sure that the train would have been packed. <BJ>

Looking forward to attending with my brother tomorrow, will be my first visit to the railway. Will the parking near Keynsham be signposted? Would be tempted to get the train over from his in Newport if it wasn't for the engineering works in Bristol at the moment.

As the WTT was not on the AVR website I tried to purchase one at Bitton today. Unfortunately they will not be available until tomorrow morning as they have yet to be printed.

All three engines were in steam today so all appears to be running to plan. <BJ>

Enjoyed my visit to the AVR today. Was very wet at times but thanks to all involved.

Can recommend the cakes on sale in the cafe.
