Great run up No 9 and mile after mile around 75mph. Great visit to see PRINCE OF WALES Great run back at 102mph. And possibly the best food I’ve ever had on a steam charter!!
Many many thanks to everyone involved. John

A memorable trip behind 60009 today. Not much can beat the thrill of an A4 out of King's Cross and she looked honestly work-stained, just like a hard-worked but well maintained A4 would have looked in the early sixties. It was particularly good to hear and feel the engine working without a diesel on the back. Performance was smooth and sustained throughout, though checked a couple of times because of late running service trains.

I feel particularly emotional about the thought of this loco being retired. Considering its history and continuous service, I think 60009 has a lineage that links us directly to Gresley in a way that only 60007 can match, more so than Flying Scotsman. Thank you, John Cameron.

I don't normally *do* diesels, but I must say Alycidon was very impressive on the return, both in terms of its presentation and its performance. The sound of those twin Napier engines can still make the hairs on my neck stand up. Pull yourself together, man!

All credit to Network Rail for letting her strut her stuff on the fast line.
14 minutes late at Huntingdon, but got to Kings Cross 9 minutes early:).

I hummed and muttered and wondered about going out to film the noise, and decided against because it appeared to be routed on the slow most of the way.

    GRRRRRR.

A workmanlike performance from 60009; it certainly still has spirit and a will to run fast on the line it was built to operate.

The Deltic was not really my 'thing' to begin with, but was willing to give it a go. Unfortunately any conversion on the road to Damascus was stifled by the fact that Standard was kept at the back for the whole trip. It was also noticeable how the train was emptier after Durham. Happy they are still about for those that appreciate them, but still not my thing.

Must admit I had a belter of a day - fantastic run behind 60009 on the line where she belongs (and, I am told, with John Cameron firing at one point!), an instructive (but expensive) break in Darlington Locomotive Works and a storming trip home behind quite possibly the shiniest Deltic ever! All made even more enjoyable by sharing a table with a gentleman who regularly travelled everywhere by rail in his working life and had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the LNER engines he rode behind in his younger days :)

Four weeks to the next trip...!

60009 (KX).JPG I chased this beautiful machine from Kings Cross to Newcastle Central, stopping for snaps at Huntingdon, Peterborough Nrth, Doncaster and Northallerton on the way, but my favourite shot was at the Cross on platform 2. Three minutes before the off, unleashing a lot of smoke and steam, a truly wonderful sight.
