The engineering bricks are a good feature and do at least have a more heritage appearance. Another feature - which I presume has been dealt with since the photograph was taken - is the apparent buffing of wagons against the brick wall!

The engineering bricks are not part of the new structure, they were put there in the 1980s.

What's wrong with them? They look similar to a certain GWR design but I guess they don't look like the ones on the rest of the line so I presume that is why some people seem to dislike them.

They can be painted, I've seen plenty of photos on GWSR blogs of you wielding a brush and very skilfully too!

The construction quality seems fine but it's such a pity that the chance for a structure to complement the fine Monmouth building has been missed. It's good to see that the Usketeers will be putting up something authentic on the other side of the tracks.

I agree on the aesthetic qualities of those handrails - however are they something which are mandated by modern accessibility requirements?

A handrail may or may not be a legal requirement, but the choice of material! We are supposed to be a museum to show what it was like. The Victorians had handrails, but not like these.

As a regular volunteer I am working on a railway not a museum that seeks to replicate every GWR rivet.

There is certainly that aspect to it and in some cases I agree with you, but certainly in a good number of cases it would have been just as easy to do it right as it would to do it "wrong".

You should acquaint yourself with the statutes of the GWR Trust, of which you are a member. It has a sole objective: 'To create and maintain a railway museum for the benefit of the public'.

Indeed, we hand a 'Your day out' brochure to every passenger in which we say: 'we are not just a railway but a living museum'.

In an attempt to hi-jack this thread back on to Broadway Station Rebuild. here is a link to the latest blog update from the Friends of Broadway Station:
    http://broadwaystationgroup.blogspot.com/2018/09/autumn-round-corner.html

My personal opinion of course but I remember so many times being told by my bosses that "attention to detail" is important and it is noticed, not just by "enthusiasts". I think the Broadway project (despite its well-documented difficulties at times) has shown this (refreshment room white plastic sockets aside - soon fixable) attention to detail and, at the risk of repeating myself, has set a benchmark which other stations on the line should and are, working towards. Hence the apparent shock and horror regarding handrails at Winchcombe.

Yes, I read that in the brochure and was very impressed with its overall content and quality - 12 pages, no less. It did strike me that another version - maybe only four sides - might be a better alternative offering for returning folk as I could see quite a lot of money going into waste bins at the end of the day.

As for the 'living museum' point I read that as meaning the railway itself and general ambience rather than whether a fence had been sourced from B&Q. I have to say that I'm glad 'authenticity' didn't extend to the toilet facilities. ;)

Or to the authentic lead piping bringing the main water supply in, or distributing it about the building.
