The loco is on the rear for shunt purposes at Scarborough and since it is adequate for the role of propulsion support there appears no good reason to change the procedure. Having travelled on this train in July I can vouch for the fact that the rear 37 (37669) worked between York and Scarborough but 35018 BIL still made a good enough sight for both passengers and line-siders.

Does a diesel go to Scarborough LE normally for shunting?
My query was why propulsion from the rear of the train is permissible for the SSE but seemingly not on other routes where the traction is provided by a diesel [almost] at the front of the train? Some services have additionally had a diesel on the rear for shunting as well as the traction unit between steam and train.

I thought that the ruling by the authorities was clear. The motive power that is providing the bulk of the traction must be at the front. In the case of the recent steam/diesel arrangement the rules were even clearer. For example:

"Steam locos MUST NOT apply power at ANY POINT during the journey.
In the event of a failure of the assisting diesel loco, no attempt must be made to move the train without liaison and permission with the Route Duty Incident Officer."

In the case of the SSE I can only assume that it ran with the diesel on the rear through a special dispensation for that line only because it is more or less flat. Clearly the Northern Fells are entirely different.

47232 ran slowly into Holgate a few minutes late with a slight technical problem this morning, now being taken off and BIL attached.

TP and LNER both held whilst we ran out of Holgate and into platform 3.

And a bit of critical constructive analysis never did anybody any harm.

The SSE.............10A have had the perfect job with the SSE to get the mileage on BIL, get it well settled/bedded in and next season it'll be ready for the national stage, look out Clan Line, there's a new kid on the block.
