Great picture of the lovely John CSD 475! You are not the only one taking pictures I see;)
I should like to see 'Albatros' 498.0 operational in the future (as well as 387.0 and 486.0:D) Another interesting project is the restoration of one of the two cylindered class 399.0.

    kind regards,
    Knut

I have to arrest myself. The CSD class 486.006 'green Anton' actually is operational these days. It has now been repainted to a darker green (much better in my view) rather than the very sharp green it had previously.

    A picture:) https://www.k-report.net/discus/obrazky/17/50/1261750.jpg

A Czech video showing the building and basic of a steam locomotive. More of interest the video shows the construction of the mighty CSD class 556.0 , in my opinion the finest 2 -cylindered 2-10-0 ever produced.

It is with pleasure I noticed that the third survivor of the famous 498.1 class "Albatros" now are rescued from further decline and going to be (cosmetical) restored. The locomotive , although it`s more a wreck, has for several years being stored outdoors and will be transferred from Louny to the new base at Česká Lípa. A link to their facebook page (I hope it works):

Former C S D loco's ran a number of railtours in Austria in the late 1990s,
I'm attaching a photo of 498 104 on Muruzzushlag shed after working a train from Wien over the Semmering.27/09/1997.
Also mention of 486 006 above reminded me of a tour behind 387 043 ,this was the smaller version of the 486 class built 1924-37 and a 4-6-2.Photod on a Wien to Graz special on 13/05/1999.

I spent 13 months living in the Czech republic, so travelled regularly on the railways there. Had a ride behind this 4-8-2 steam loco 475.101 which ran trips in summer from Brno out to smaller towns out in the countryside, different directions on different weekends but always starting from Brno. You could just turn up and buy a ticket from staff standing next to the train. It wasn't expensive, probably about £20 for a full day out and mostly families with kids going on it. The coaches were 4 wheel ones with seats made from varnished wooden slats, no upholstery and it stopped at 2 or 3 places so you could just choose where to get off and have a day out before the return trip. There were posters in the station for the trips but no information in English so quite hard to get info. '

The loco I read survived as a stationary boiler at the modern depot in Brno at the end of steam and then was later restored gradually back to working order by the depot staff in their spare time.
There is also a steam tram in Brno, I saw it just once when I was struggling home with bags of shopping from Tesco and it puffed past at the end of the street so I didn't get a proper look and never saw it again.
The Czech railways were quite relaxed with safety, wooden foot crossings everywhere. On one occasion I was a modern electric train between Brno and Prague. It stopped, and after a while was obvious it had broken down, so everyone walked to the last coach and got down onto the track and walked about a mile or so back to the nearest station. Passengers struggling along with bags and suitcases along the track. At one point another electric train came fast the other way with its horn blaring and passengers leaping out of the way with their bags. Was a comical sight ! In Britain Health and Safety would have had heart failure, but no worries there. Once we got back to the station, just got on the next train.

Also went to the steam museum outside Prague and in Bratislava too there is a small museum at the station with a number of static steam locos.

Thank you very much for sharing this pictures peckett! :) The 498.104 are just a stunning engine! A sister engine no. 498.106 were also in service for several years.
For those with bulging wallet you have the opportunity to be an owner of a planned scale 0 model of the class 498.1 !
