Where is the Perrygrove Heywood Collection now?

I understand that a number of 15" gauge ex Eaton Hall Heywood items were on show at Perrygrove, but, maybe five years ago, the collection was moved.

Does anybody know what was included in the collection (I think there was a replica loco and the dining car - or possibly that was a replica too) and where it is now?

 

I believe they may be on at private line associated with Station Road Steam, at Metheringham in Lincolnshire.

The Heywood Collection (assuming it still exists as a discrete entity) definitely includes a replica dining car, plus a bogie 'open', a replica 4w rail bending wagon and a recreated Effie. There's a recreated 0-6-0T Ursula out there somewhere too, but I'm not sure if that's a 'collection' or an Eaton Rly loco. Bits'n'bobs of a couple of original Heywood wagons survive in varying states of preservation. One notable Heywood design was for a wagon with removable sides and ends, allowing it to double up as a flat wagon. Ingenious bloke!

Other Heywood kit has been recreated for the partially revived Eaton Railway (not to be confused with the Eaton Park Miniature Railway - that's a dual 5"/71/4" gauge ground level line in Norfolk ), plus certain original stock (bought by Jack Howey from ER on it's closure in 1947 and which were repatriated back to Eaton from the RH&D during the 90's).

Duffield locos were:0-4-0T Effie 0-6-0T Ella & 0-8-0T Muriel (now 0-8-2 River Irt)
Eaton Hall locos were: 0-4-0T Katie & 0-6-0T's Shelagh & Ursula

One of the 0-6-0 chassis lurks under R&ER 4-6-4 diesel Shelagh of Eskdale, though I'm not certain which one. Maybe the clue is in the name? [Edit: Or not ..... see next post!]

Katie (the original Heywood 0-4-0T rather than the Eaton Rly recreation, or the unrelated Guest 2-4-2 sister of Sîan) has risen from the ashes at Ravenglass, following a (very very) heavy rebuild utilising Heywood frames which had somehow survived (under a wagon IIRC) since the loco was dismantled in the 1920's.

What with all the attention on Whillan Beck and River Esk this loco reappeared with a lot less fanfare than it deserved. Indeed, the whole project seems to have been done on the QT. I certainly heard zip ahead of stumbling, by sheer chance, on the clip below. I believe this loco to be the one which had a short spell at Fairbourne, after the line was reconstructed from a 2ft gauge horse tramway. Here's proof of at least one of those statements!



Unsurprisingly, it can't manage a modern full length passenger service train, but it's a superb addition to La'al Ratty's historic stud all the same.

Wherever the Heywood Collection (formerly located at Perrygrove) is now, an online presence would be no less useful than when the previous one vanished into the ether!

..... and I reckon there needs to be a moratorium on naming any further 15" gauge locos Katie...... 'coz it's all just too confusing!

I believe the replica Katie at Eaton Hall is one of a batch of 4 sets of parts made by Brian Gent of F.M.B Engineering. Of the others, one is in a private collection in Lincolnshire which I think is finished, Jim Heylock at the Moors Valley Railway swapped 3 Jaywick coaches for a kit of parts and is turning it into an 0-4-2t to his own design, and I can't remember the story behind the remaining remaining kit of parts but it's out there somewhere.

So if you discount Jim's build, there could be as many as 4 Katie's out there in the future (including the heavily rebuilt original) just to confuse you that little bit further!!
