S&D Chilcompton Station Project

    by the time they dig out the cutting anybody who remembers the S&D will be long gone Midsomer Norton is hardly a tourist hotspot

    I use the words 'sort of' in that the cutting has not been returned to its pre-infill width and depth!

    I wonder if there could be any value in trying to lobby for statutory exemptions from the landfill tax for schemes of this nature?

    You could try, but I don’t give it many odds - the exemption went as the government closed a “loophole”.

    Surely the important thing is what the cutting was in-filled with? If it's household waste then the landfill tax would apply, if it's just earth/rubble then you could just dump it e.g. on some other land owned by the railway and just bring the level up?

    Does anyone know what the infill is?

    Apparently, we’re getting planning papers drawn up, trust tax and membership registration set up, and inspections of the right-of-way.

    Some years ago my ex wife & I looked at the particulars of a house in Chilcompton that included some of the trackbed.

    So I could have had trains at the bottom of the garden.

    (Assuming I hadnt divorced which was almost 100% certain from the off)

    I was up there a few week ago, but failed to locate Chilcompton station site, I did however walk the line from Chilcompton to the twin tunnels and then round on the road into Midsomer Norton, a lovely area, that requires a lot of work, I do wish you well with the project.

    given the proximity of new housing i would think there will be opposition to anything happening there i believe the Clutton station project bit the dust for similar reasons

    What is happening please as I tried to look at the facebook page but as I am not a member of the group I am unable to see what is happening as, when I was on the phone today with someone who is helping to make a model railway of the S&DJR and then changed to the real thing I was told the people in Chilcompton doesn't want the railway to come back to their old railway station as the rail enthusiasts will upset their quiet village.

    Also Radstock Council will like the line to come back their way as a missing bridge when replaced will help to control the traffic.

    Dose anybody know any more on these things.

    like a lot of similar schemes starts off well then the harsh realities of dealing with the locals rears its ugly head look whats happenend to Midford loads of talk about rebuilding but so far nothing has happenend apart from a bit of vegetation clearance these schemes are too late to save anything worthwhile.

    Replacing the bridge will be the easy part. Lowering the height of the road to the pre 1970s profile will prove to be the difficult and expensive part. <BJ>

    locals vehemently objected along the lines of over our dead bodies will a railway return . station site has a protective covenant on it

    reading the group I am sceptical anything will come of it

    There are two significant bridges to replace to get to Radstock, those over Silver Street and Radstock Road

    who pays for replacing these bridges I am sure the council will not being as short of funds its a shame that the Radstock site up to the colliery did not succeed as would of been a interesting tourist attraction even had a wagon incline.
