There look to have been a fair few line side fires again this may what are the causes as the same happened last year as well.

Quite simple really; dead growth still around from last year, not a huge amount of new growth yet and dry weather (plus steam locos!).

It always amuses me that (Network Rail and it's predecessor) consider peak fire risk in July and August - really this time of year is as much a risk as any.

I see that 34027 is now not in use due to fire risk but there are still two other steam locos in use.

The couple of hours rain that is forecast from 1900 today should dampen things down.

You are both correct. It was in use and it is not for now, stopped for the fire risk.

Better that than diesel substitutions, though.

With the loss of 7812 + 34053 + 80072 + 6023 and with 75069 still not ready, can't see they had much choice!

I see 2857 is back in action though.

Thanks Pete - feels quite tight given the level of service the SVR run, so I can understand the desire to get another loco available.

Only 4 locos (with 43106) permitted to take 8 coach trains. A 'B' service requires 1 diesel and 3 steam for service trains. Often a footplate experience runs which usually a tender loco. So yes, very tight.
There has been some relaxation of rules on double-heading this year though.

Of the ‘loses’ 34053 seems the most short sighted. The others either expected (7812) or never planned as long term residents in the first place.
