It was extraordinary - I was expecting it to be quite hard work getting up to that speed but it was so quick! If it happens again I definitely want to be on board.

As well as the stills from Welwyn North, that I posted earlier in this thread, I left my video camera running:

It is being reported that 60163 Tornado has sustained damage on her 90mph run from Kings Cross to York and is currently awaiting assistance near Sandy. The tour will be dragged to Peterborough where 60163 will be removed and head to the NVR for further inspection. No timings are available at the moment, but keep a look out on our Peterborough and NVR Cams later on.......

That pictures mine taken from a GN 365 between Biggleswade & Sandy whilst the driver was talking to the NR guys, pic got removed from the FB page for some reason but i'd guess it's to do with not wanting everything seeing the severity of the failure until an official announcement is made

90mph aside, this train has caused chaos on the fast lines from/to London.

The past few years has seen a huge reduction of steam from the capital. But the question of suitability of steam for such routes has to be asked... sitting down on any line is not good but stopping the job on the south end of the ECML could not be more high profile.

Even a diesel on the rear wouldn’t have recovered today as the 20mph rescue trundle has shown.

A future where modern traction takes Railtours to preserved lines, or dedicated routes like the S&C and WHL will gain strength from today.

Load of rubbish. Modern traction sits down on a regular basis and chaos ensues. On the ECML it’s usually something bringing down the wires.

That looks very much like a union link.

The first prophet of doom has emerged barely before Tornado has reached the NVR. Surely we need to know what actually happened and why before pontificating in this way.

As you must be aware the ECML has sat down time and time again due to dewirements and so on. Until there is a full investigation and report, I can't see how this incident changes anything.

Not forgetting of course the disruption and cancellations caused when the Hull Trains 180 unit suffered the ruptured fuel tanks.

Agree that we need a sense of perspective about today’s unfortunate happening but this was no ordinary service train, not even an ordinary steam excursion. In the words of the A1ST “this will be a very special day” and sadly the fallout may be magnified as a result. We will have to wait and see but that’s hard if you are emotionally involved as many of us here are. BTW the shed just managed pass to pass to beat Tornado’s start to pass schedule from Grantham to the outskirts of Donny

If you look at my previous post I did try but somehow I knew it would fall on deaf ears

I was on the North Briton and now the Ebor Flyer. Sorry, I seem to have jinxed it again.

It was, indeed, failure of the inside union link - I have this from the top.
As disappointed as we all are who were on board, my heart goes out to those at A1SLT who put in so much effort to try and make this tour happen for us. They will try again and they deserve our support.

I know our threadbare railways are a bit hopeless when something goes wrong but haven't they got slow lines to divert the traffic round the blockage?
