    Isn't it to obviate buffer-lock - especially on some of the tighter curves that exist in carriage sidings, Depots and Workshops layouts ?

    Presumably oval buffers would do that too.

    My feeling is that it's a purely aesthetic thing, since 66s are quite angular locomotives generally.

    Quite like 'em myself, although I know this isn't a popular view.
