Yes they were. There are a couple of well known colourail slides of 60065 & 60072 in blue. There's also nothing that can't be done now, so if you like your A3 in Photoshop blue livery-

A fair few more than those IIRC. If I can remember when I get home, I'll dig out my RCTS greenie and see just how many were painted blue.

Yes, almost all the Class had various blue liveries.

There was an LMS experimental blue/grey version of the 1946 livery, which one Jubilee carried. Don't think any colour photos (I only know of one contemporary colour photo of the 1946 livery itself) but some reconstructions on the internet.

Yes, this was 45573. The livery was termed "slate grey"

A blue Jube would be a rather nice sight to see though...

Better still, a Scot in BR Express Passenger blue.

Yes I imagine the blue would suit a Scot very well, particularly apt being Caledonian colours more or less.

I think 46234 had this livery for a time.

According to the RCTS book on the Stanier pacifics (which I'm just reading) it refers to the colour as dark blue-grey but then quotes the R.O. which states '6234 ..... being painted a sort of light grey (with a bluish tint) and lined in gold and 'Midland Lake'.

David Jenkinson in his book 'Profile of the Duchesses' reckons 6234 was lined out on one side only!

As does the RCTS book, which quotes 'contemporary accounts.' It also states that there 'were suggestions that both sides were eventually lined.'

I agree with your sentiment. The downside is that a loco in this condition doesn't represent anything except an idealised vision of what steam might have been like in a fantasy world. Which the owners are quite entitled to recreate if they wish.

So were A3s the only non 8Ps to be painted blue and if so why?

I think I have somewhere a framed print of a Duchess in blue.

Looking splendid no doubt but the Duchess class was 8P. My question is what other 7Ps were blue?
