Aaaah, 45593 Kolhapur , nearly as good as B & Orissa
We had Kolhapur for a year at Holbeck before it was withdrawn.

Speaking of Jubes, from observations of them at St. Albans it was noted that the firemen on many of them preferred to wear a knotted handkerchief cap instead of the regular BR 'greasetop'. Was it something of a LMR fashion?

Here's a shot of it at Barrow Hill, a bit of a dodgy shade of green was carried by the loco at the time (July 1999)

All this talk of the correct shade/colour etc & this image shows how different a colour looks in sun or shade.

When I first saw Leander in black undercoat I was hoping it would be the LMS black livery, always thought Scots guardsman looked pretty good in it

Several people have mentioned certain jubilees as being *special* and Holbeck seems to have been a place that treasured them. What was it that made Bihar & Orissa etc. specially memorable? Was it just the locos, or locos combined with dedicated crews?

If Brian Oliver's plans for Galatea had come to fruition she would definitely have been finished in LMS maroon, as was his beloved Leander.

IIRC 45581 was a fairly late arrival at Holbeck from Farnley Junction.

45581 was never at Holbeck. It was always a Farnley Junction loco. Its exploits between Leeds and Standedge are well documented. I am sure that Victor will confirm this.

To be honest, a Jubilee down in this neck of the woods will be welcome regardless of livery. Royal Scot showed last October that it can run on the Brighton Main Line, the West Sussex Coast Line and the Arun Valley line. If anyone wants to re-run that trip (apart from the mess-up at Preston Park) with any one of Galatea, Leander or Bahamas, all I say is bring it on!

Green, because it's been 50 years since a single chimney green Jub graced mainline metals.

No objections to any of the other liveries except 45699 in West Coast maroon, which isn't so bad if viewed from a minimum of 450 yards away with one eye closed. (definitely tongue in cheek considering my avatar pic :Borg:).

I'm still a little bit excited that 3 serviceable Jubilee's will be resident to Carnforth soon.

It was unique to 5552 but this illustrates the dangers of a repaint that purports to show a different member of the class as it was. For that livery it should have a domeless boiler and a riveted tender and for the really pedantic, a crosshead vacuum pump and no AWS. The original loco finished in this way was originally 5642 changing numbers and being named Silver Jubilee in April 1935

Not usually Handkerchiefs, they were more likely the standard issue sponge cloths issued to footplate staff. In hot weather they were a lot more comfortable than the standard issue cap, beloved of preservation era drivers, with their rather sweaty cap bands. Whatever they all kept most of the dirt at bay. Sadly you can't seem to get proper sponge cloths of the quality issued by BR any longer, but do have a couple of "preserved" new originals as a reference sample!

As for colour, a 5X just has to be LMS red, and as for that apalling green used by the GCR photographers on 5593, The GCR photographer who selected Woolworths number 20 green to represent BR standard locomotive green should be flogged! Whilst the (5593) Silver Jubilee representation gave a flavour of what 5552 must have looked like, the silver painted boiler bands gave it a slightly tawdry appearance, the originals were chrome plated and silver paint just doesn't do chrome. To my mind LMS '46 black does look very good when new and clean, it looks far better in real life than on models and B&W photos just don't seem to convey the impact of the real thing.
    Regards
    Bob

I actually 5569 looks lovely in unofficial BR Maroon - so much so I finished an O gauge model of her in that livery...

My great uncle was a fireman (maybe driver?) on the LMS (not sure if he was holbeck or not but he lived in leeds) - the poor fella is less than lucid now (89 and dementia) - a few years back he could talk at length about stuff, he certainly preferred them in BR green...and he mentioned that 'Nigeria was a dog...

Interestingly, when the LMS started rebuilding the Scots, the official works photos showed them in LMS lined red express passenger livery (or rather, they grey version of it). So there was clearly an intention that they be given this livery, perhaps when hostilities ceased. In reality of course they were turned out in unlined LMS black, and post-war, those which were repainted got the 1946 lined black with maroon edging.
Nevertheless, in my view this makes a rebuilt Scot in lined LMS red perfectly acceptable and authentic enough for me...

Indeed, silver paint just doesn't do the job, although the original 5552 in that black and chrome incarnation didn't work for me. As C Hamilton Ellis noted, something on the lines of '... all dressed up for a funeral.'
