I've just contacted the Swanage Railway. The very helpful assistant said that she thinks that the 'U' class loco is running today but was quite positive that the Ivatt will run at the weekend.

    I hope this helps. <BJ>

80146 went out about 20 mins ago, good news about the Ivatt though.

As a shareholder in the Squadron I have not heard any communication that suggests that the boiler had to come off again. Absolute pain if it does. Hope the ticket doesn't start running untill the inspector is happy with it.

I think a bit of sympathy is called for here, After a brilliant start to the year wth the widely-acclaimed Bulleid gala and then the start of the Wareham services, our friends in Swanage have had a pretty rotten time recently - the prang involving 80104 and 34070, "super sub" 30120 being brought in only to be found to be unusable until repairs can be carried out, 34072 not being ready as soon as expected, the gala cancelled and now a broken spring messing up what would have still made a decent weekend with a popular visiting engine to compensate for the lack of gala.

I too am sorry not to be heading to Swanage tomorrow to enjoy 41312 in action, but one assumes that it will be steamed at a later date after all the effort to bring it down to Dorset. I am sure that the railway has the resilience to recover from this unfortunate chain of events and wish them well in the meantime.

Is the broken spring due to the road haulage? The sharp change of gradient from trailer to slope then again onto terra firma, has caused problems for locos before.

Maybe back in the day when locos were hauled up uneven ramps onto a standard height trailer deck over a steep joint.

These days, all of the hauliers have purpose built spine neck trailers with rails built in and shallow ramps with smooth transition onto the trailer.

For a loco spring to suddenly break leaves going on or off a trailer, the spring already had cracked leaf or leaves, the extra deflection of the spring going on and off the ramp, just finishes it off.
A spring in good condition won’t break going on and off a ramp.

As far as I'm aware the spring needing attention was notified to us before transportation. So in this case, no.

41312 went out on a test run on the 14:00 service today double headed with 80146. Returned leading the 14:40 from Norden with 80146 on the back. Going well across Corfe Common on the return trip in the mist and low cloud. Understand there may be a chance if all OK in use on the service trains tomorrow, but do not quote me on that. Heard a rumour the Ivatt may be staying until the New Year. Anyone able to confirm the truth (or not) of that?
