Hindlow is the one that's floated my boat. But as a mate of mine has pointed out, two trips over what is generally the same stretch of line- we've been here before.

However, and despite the provisional early start, the route looks good, and it will be a second bite of the cherry for Todmorden curve. The only thing missing is the LNWR route Stockport via Whaley Bridge.

    Other comments:

The Pennine Limited is a clever piece of rebranding for the 'Tin Bath' diversionary route via Wakefield.

The Whitby trips are going slightly different ways- the London-starter going direct via Eaglescliffe rather than Darlington. Would be interesting if it does the dive-under at Northallerton.

I suspect there will be a couple more for 70013's last months in traffic in due course.

It seems sensible to me that in most cases the motive power is non specific other than "steam" or double header. I think this is the wisest way of dealing with the inevitable availability issues that arise because a train can probably be mainly sold out regardless of loco. Announcing the confirmed loco(s) nearer the date can then give a new impetus to sales of any remaining seats.

The Whitby bash starting from KGX is very tempting.

Strongly recommended based on this years trip from York. Lovely country from the branch onwards. Good climb up to the summit both ways (though the speed restrictions mean it is not an all out effort especially going up past Nunthorpe). Excellent destination. One of the few chances to have a ride behind the B1 and the Standard on the main line.

It's probably restricted to about 7 or 8 coaches.

It is, but it is likely to be a longer day than advertised(earlier start?) , and probably a shorter stay in Whitby. Look at the actual timings for this year's trip from York. I will probably book on it.

I agree that the Whitby trip is definitely worth doing for all the reasons already given. And I guess that now it has been done and all the wrinkles exposed - there were few in March - it may be possible to refine the timings. However.....

It looks as though the route from York to Whitby will not go via Darlington outbound, as in March and as is planned for the York departure version, and that will save time. So you are talking about three and a half hours each way plus time at Whitby. That's 10 hours, assuming that you want to give people a sensible time at the destination. Add to that the time from KGX to York with all the stops (plus the loco change) and that feels like an extra three hours each way, at best. So my maths gets to 16 hours and that's going for the tightest of margins. The RTC planners reckon it's 15 hours. Either way, this trip could be a mission. So, good luck if you book but it is still worth doing.

After this year, which has, on the whole, been great but expensive from my perspective, I'm putting a limit on the number I'm doing next year. I'll probably do in the order of six new bookings (he says, but the intention is there; I've also stuck with Charity Railtours' 'The Mayflower'). I'm certainly up for having a crack at 'The High Peak Explorer', and maybe Whitby (London version boarding at York as it is a bit different from the one I did in 2014). I'm hoping one or two more itineraries might be revealed soon so I will know my options for next spring.

I wonder what the motive power for the WCME's will be? 35018?

Given I live at the southern end of the GN, it's a more attractive proposition than a York start irrespective of how long the day will be.

The reference to the York actual timings 2017, is that it is likely to be a longer day based on the approximate timings, for the London start. I alway look what has been done before, for the whole or part of a route.

From memory I think it's difficult to do anything very different from last year between Middlesbrough and Whitby. So the train has to hit 'Boro around 1120 and 1810. Working back from that suggests KX around 0700 and 2300 allowing for 40 mins each way at Holgate.

Edit--- should have said 'Boro 1105, Nunthorpe 1120 outbound.

Thanks for that Peter. Ties up with Big Al's assessment of 16 hours.

I suspect Whitby from London will be a long day, but 0700 to 2300, if it is a short as that, makes it no longer than a CCE. Well short of my record stewarding trip which was a Central Wales Explorer 0520 from Slough, due back 0018 (although we did arrive before midnight!)

Even with it so far away time wise I'm considering doing this but on the cushions for a change, but only from York.

Just had an email from RTC saying that their "full winter programme is now available to view and book" and I find it hard to believe there appear to be no CME's running at all in Jan,Feb and March .

    Does anyone know why?

They are still shown on the booking page ( as well as being referred to in the email), so I expect they have not uploaded them and/or added them the tours list.
