Maybe Virgin will sponsor it and it can be shopped out like a Pendolino....

At the risk of being accused of stating the obvious....the moment that Scots Guardsman is taken out of service - i.e. in the next week - they will need British India Line in action. So whatever needs to be done will be done fairly quickly now, I'm guessing.

To be fair though Alan after the final Dalesman next week there is not an intensive programme in the north so perhaps more breathing space than first appears. Keeping 46115 alive for the main season has been a masterstroke.
The shortest odds to me are a full debut for 35018 on the Lune Trust train 30/9, complete with BR green livery. Possible opportunity on 6/9 though too.

its telling that Clan line has only needed one loaded test run, and since returned to what you might call normal service, where as BIL seems to need further adjustment.

Telling us that one is a total restoration from a Barry wreck and one is a renewal of an already reliable loco?

i'm not sure if its that, clan line was stripped down to the last nut and bolt, BIL,would have been rebuilt from that same stand point, that 46115 was not quite on song either when that first came out makes me wonder does carnforth lack the experience of setting up 3 cylinder engines? crewe set up 34046 and 35028 both ran almost outside of the box .

Not inexperience I think just a different type of operation. Clan Line is owned by a a group of enthusiasts and have always insisted that whatever needs doing to take it through to its next overhaul is done and turn to the membership and the public for additional funds if necessary as illustrated by the fitting of a new tubeplate this time. There is also a band of volunteers to keep it in top class condition during its working cycle. Anthing going seriously wrong mid term and it will need to be taken to a contractor and fitted in to their workflow losing money while out of traffic.
Carnforth have a fully equipped workshop on site so any faults that develop can be dealt with quickly all under their control and while out of traffic they have enough locos in house to cover the work. A business like that cannot also rely on the volunteer element to keep things running

Clan Line was stripped from working order by a team who have been involved with her for many years and previous overhauls.
British India Line was a rusty collection of parts, probably with quite a few missing, Galatea was rebuilt from what was originally bought as spares, Scots Guardsman was perhaps not quite as bad but had still not turned a wheel in many years.
There is no way that these restorations can be compared with Clan Lines overhaul.

My big hope is that regardless of the differences in the overhaul/rebuild, there will be a distinct similarity in performance. If 35018 can match Clan Line's recent achievements, she will soon become one of the most popular engines on the main line.
