I note that Clun has a mechanical lubricator on the driver's side. What does this lubricate? As it appears to have only one, presumably it retains the usual GW hydrostatic lubricator for the bits the mechanical one doesn't?

I believe Clun carries the same arrangement as 5043, with the mechanical providing oil to the atomizers and thus the steam circuit and a gauge in the cab showing "oil" or "no oil" during coasting. Neither have the hydrostatic lubricator arrangement. 5043 has one mechanical also, mounted aft of the steam pipes rather than before as on 7029.

All Castles with 4-row superheater boilers had the hydrostatic lubricator replaced by a mechanical lubricator on the right hand side for cylinder lubrication. The position of the lubricator varied slightly - either ahead of or behind the outside steam pipe, or in one or two cases on the side of the smokebox. All double chimney Kings were similarly fitted. Since preservation 5029 Nunney Castle has also been equipped with a mechanical lubricator but retains a low superheat boiler.

Getting close. Even the name plates are getting some TLC.

Not quite David. Lubricator behind the steam pipe was the first arrangement, followed by the revised arrangement with the lubricator towards the front of the platform. Both of these us=tilised the Silvertown 14 feed lubricator ( 4 cylinder feeds, 8 valve chest feeds, 1 regulator feed and 1 feed blanked off). The final type was the Davies and Metcalfe patent valveless lubricator which was mounted in the front platform position on the right side but which had an auxilliary oil reservoir mounted above it on the smokebox side to keep the oil warm and fluid. IIRC 5 engines were fitted with this, 4087, 4088, 5084, 7013 and 7014.
    Regards
    Bob

At least the BBC and ITV have realized that other locomotives than a Scottish named one exist.
Hope to see her in the West Country sometime.
