The third rail could have been the saviour in that situation, had it not been there the road could have driven into the ballast and derailed the loco.

Interesting - did the coupling rod hitting the 3rd rail actually save the derailment by giving them time to stop with the rod not completely burying itself in the ballast/ground (the report does not specifically state that but it could be inferred)

IIRC yes, plus the considerable bang when it Landed... dread to think of the consequences otherwise, Steam locos and Pole vaulting not a happy combination.

The underside of the con rod at the small end was noticeably scratched more like it had been bouncing on the ballast than the juice rail. The juice rail was displaced from the pots for a fair distance anyway.
If you think about it, the fact that the big end was still attached to the wheel would have had the con rod reciprocating, and with the small end unrestrained by the gudgeon pin, the con rod would have been flapping around almost in mid air and therefore practically prevented from digging into a sleeper end or ballast.

Quite what 34067s Winchfield incident has to do with the resurrection of an excellent steam loco; 35018. I do not know!

Thanks would like to see a MN with an early crest and had seen pictures of 35018 and 35022 but not sure what others did.

For the crests I thought I saw something along the lines of Eastleigh not having large enough crest transfers to apply to the MN's so went with some for tank engines but not sure if it is correct.

The reason was, I've just found out, was with the cut down tender sides the large crest didn't fit well between the lining so all nine locos rebuilt before the change of totem had the small version It wasn't because they had run out of large transfers as unrebuilt Bulleids were still being turned out with it.

Still going through the snagging list, most likily, as with anything, they won't risk her until they are happy she is right, Of course, if she re appears, in BR lined express green, with British India line Plates, most of us will be dancing a gig of joy .

Pat Marshall has said she has no idea if it's livery will change and 'it looks magnificent in black' although looking at the tender totem, it does look rather 'temporary'

Actually I'd like it lined out in BR Black...

I know people always go for something traditional and I would be minded to agree if it was something like the A2 for me. But I cant help thinking that Black lined out would be good and maybe we should just go with something different.

That said I've modelled an A2 in Darlington Green and that looks stunning!
