Even though your suggestion about the painting was light hearted, it was, in fact, important that we laser scanned the locomotive before painting.

Bright, shiny paintwork confuses the laser scanner. As an indication of this, we had to put masking tape on the cylinder covers, because, even after almost two years, the paint was still too shiny.

thats interesting, about a shiny paint finish confusing the laser measuring devise, how much error would it create? may it be a reason why there have been problems with gauging in the past where a loco may have been gauged, incorrect date recorded, then NR say its out of gauge, and then a double check is made and once accurate data, either from NR, or someone else, its found to be in gauge?

Thanks for that Mike. An interesting insight into the complex world of getting Steam Locomotives onto the Main Line Railway these days. IIRC 60103 also had the same procedure undertaken whilst she was still in matt black.

For those who are interested - i.e. everyone - and in case anyone missed the info before it was tagged on this thread, Clan Line has now moved under her own steam and images are at: https://clan-line.org.uk/news/crewe_24/

Other important jobs have been done including weighing/balancing the locomotive plus the laser profiling to see whether it will still go to at least as many places as it could previously.

I am sure that donations not yet made will be gratefully received. Details on their website.

Probably just came up with an 'error' message rather than incorrect data?

Just had a look through that report again and noticed in the photo's that someone has chalked 6201 on the smokebox door of 35028!
Is this a Crewe in house joke?

Looks more like 46100 to me, which would make a bit more sense.

if that is correct , that wil mean both 35028, and 35018 returning to the main line on the same day

So it is. I was looking at some of the earlier photos in the works which I'd still say had 46100 chalked on. Maybe the Crewe workforce are just running through LMS alter-egos for it.

I'm pleased to report that our CME described the light test runs as "a complete success". Clan Line is now being prepared to enter the paintshop next week and the loaded test run(s) will then take place, and subject to no problems arising she will return to Stewarts Lane 48 hours later.
