There is a response to an FOI request to the Science Museum Group at https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/minutes_of_specific_board_meetin#incoming-783370 , so it seems worth giving it a go.

Yes - except it was not given to a company but to a charity a big difference . . I don't think it would be too easy for the NRM to just give it to a commercial company quite as easily if I understand correctly.

The SRT is a company which happens to be a charity.

Indeed - but it being a Registered Charity makes all the difference, rather than if it was given to a purely commercial company . . . .

The Swanage Railway Trust is a Registered Charity (1087318) and registered at Companies house as a Company Limited By Guarantee (Company no.: 4115126).

Isn't it a shame Anthony Coulls no longer posts on here? could have saved a lot of angst

Does he not?, that is most unfortunate.. He would be able to answer the question of if/when the T9 or M7 will be transferred to SRT or MHR, on the basis of the sketchy criteria to hand, both have some form of duplication within the collection and would be welcomed by either I daresay.

Au contraire - as Fergusmacg has stated - SRT is a Charity which happens to be a company.
SRT took over from the original [1978] charity The Southern Steam Trust (275124) which had unlimited liability for it's Members and Trustees.

I know what you are both trying to say, but I suspect due diligence involves rather more than just checking the charity box. The company that owns the Jubilee Galatea is also a charity, but it is possible that that might be viewed differently from SRT. Or perhaps not?

Contrary to the impression some people seem to getting I have seen little or no serious criticism of Swanage in this thread. I have little doubt many of us will be reassured by Swanage's plans once they're able to announce them. Critics are more concerned by the NRM's decision and what this might mean for the rest of the collection. Therefore as @S.A.C. Martin suggested it is worth considering @Anthony Coulls posts from the NSR tank thread including this one:
Although Anthony makes it clear there is a professional and responsible approach being taken I stand by my earlier criticisms in this thread of the NRM's communication. A public body has a duty to be accountable to the public. This does not mean a public consultation should be carried out but a more detailed explanation is required of a decision which I believe will remain controversial for years to come. Perhaps they should do a blog entry like this one (outlining the dilemma which has led another division of the Science Museum to consider scrapping a historic machine - the Ljungstrom Turbine. Even if you disagree with their decision an explanation like this makes it more understandable and proves that due consideration is being given):

I personally felt (still feel) that this thread had some pretty hysterical posts. You're entitled to feel my posts were derogatory: I personally can't see the point of the hysteria.

I welcome your experience in government: I also had experience in a QUANGO. Of course we can ask questions: but with little or no information, assuming the worst seems at best misguided to me.

You're entitled to do your FOI but may I ask the question - as I've done before with NRM and other institutions - have you picked up the phone and asked them first? You might be surprised by the answers you get.

Seeking to get information is good. No problem with that. Just remember there's a few human beings at the end of the chains, some of which are on this forum at times and are able to observe.

Anthony Coulls original post replicated above is very welcome. Whether it helps to allay fears or make more is down to the individual.

After 31 pages of moaning, bitching and back stabbing are you surprised that Anthony doesn't post on here any more.

Freedom of information requests, ridiculous, the assumption that this was an out of the blue 'dump' a few weeks ago...ridiculous.

This thread just shows how nasty and narrow minded most hardcore enthusiasts are. I can honestly say, I have never followed a thread on this forum that has been laced with this much poison towards a cherished NRM. The SRT will make a go of this, and the NRM should be congratulated that they had the courage to give the locomotive to a group who would love it for ever more.
Instead, we just get you lot being so utterly hateful towards a body that was just trying to do the right thing. Grow up.

This for me is the saddest thing. Anthony is one of the most approachable people I have had the pleasure of conversing with. I am sure if a more constructive path had been made...

...but nothing really surprises me anymore in the enthusiast world, we seem to simply have two ends to everything: it's either received very well, or very badly. No attempt made for balance or patience.

What I struggle with is the idea that the curators are somehow not enthusiasts in themselves, which are they, and very much so. They also have a job to do and that comes with responsibilities, which I know firsthand they take very seriously.

Anyone would think, reading some of the posts in this thread, that it was being done at the whim of a pseudo banana republic dictator...!

Try to remember this is a discussion forum; people discuss stuff on here, they may also not agree with you. None of which means they need to grow up.

It is deeply regrettable that the burden of deciding what stays and goes has to be initiated by one person, albeit subject to a wider ratification process. That is a huge and unenviable responsibility placed upon an individual. There's an inevitability that individuals will have opinions about publicised decisions which are at odds with the chosen path and they have a right to air them, but only in a respectful non personalised manner. Most of what I have read which is of a questioning or critical nature in this thread has had a very measured tone borne of deep concern over the direction our national collection decision makers appear headed. It is unfortunate that the process, as described, appears to be very much in the hands of an individual, albeit with other scrutiny gates, because this means any criticism will be interpreted as being of an individual doing their job even though no personal sleight may be intended. The low level of public communication on the topic has not been helpful either, I fear, in alleviating the legitimate concerns of many supporters with profound care for the loco and wider collection which has been of great disservice to NRM and probably the individual manager too. I am sure nobody doubts the integrity of the individuals but that is not the same as believing the policy is the right one.

I must confess, that is not how many of the posts have come across. In fact I would challenge that at least one or two posts have very much questioned the integrity of the persons involved, and not at all in a professional or constructive manner.

If we all take a step back and consider each other's perception of the situation, I am sure (as I have said previously) what might be considered by one person might not be perceived the same way as another.

Such people are, sadly, not unknown, and it can be a dispiriting job to try and reduce the amount of damage they do before they progress to the next step in their career.

To be fair, not everyone who has posted on this thread is anti NRM so to say "we just get you lot being so utterly hateful" is unfair comment and tars us all with the same brush. IMO you could have worded it much better.

I think probably the individuals are asked to make the best of a bad job in terms of a policy that has an economic imperative rather than a cultural one. I also suspect targets are announced rather later in the day than would be desirable which leaves little scope for optimum consideration.

Indeed, I did not mean to tar all with the same brush. My intention was to get some people to think about the impact their comments have on people. A lot of the commentators on here have been utterly negative and spiteful towards the NRM.

However, people can hide behind keyboards all they like. Waste my tax payers money with FOI requests on a topic that is closed.
Your comments on here have real world consequences, it makes real people who really do sweat and toil over decisions like this upset. Do you honestly believe that Anthony doesn't read this and read all your hurtful and ill thought out nonsense. It must take some serious willpower to refrain from rising to the bait.

Think about the damage you are doing with your keyboard. This is national preservation, not 'National, you didn't run that by me.com' I've said it before, and I will now say it again, this thread is now devoid of information because of the utterly groundless finger pointing, bitching, moaning and so on. If you had just been supportive, proactive and open to the idea, perhaps now you would know more. But there in lies the beauty of the internet. You can type before your brain has had the chance to catch up.
