I thought this was the case, but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks for the confirmation.

I managed to see the first train of the day yesterday (Sunday) and was still at the railway late into the evening for the three loco Bulleid ensemble returning to Swanage. The day was superb.

The trains were running about an hour late at times but it meant that the gala was extended by an hour. No complaints from me on that account. I was informed that part of the delay during the afternoon was because the fire brigade were called to deal with a lineside fire to the north of Norden.

The standard tank looked very good on the evening freight train. Thanks to the Swanage folk for turning the loco so that it faced Wareham. That was a pleasant surprise.

A question for you all. Would there ever have been an occasion where five different Bulleid Pacifics visited Swanage in one day prior to preservation?

Finally a huge thank you to the railway for staging such an adventurous and successful gala and to the various loco groups for their help in staging the event. <BJ>

I can only echo what everyone else has said, plus say thanks for opening up Herston Works and bringing Sidmouth's frames down to Corfe Castle.

    A distant 'token' shot...

Was a great gala but for me the real stars was the Swanage Marketing team. They done an amazing job creating a buzz about this event.

I was on the 35011 Stand inside Swanage booking office and was great to meet so many of national preservation members in person.

Erm, yes, as fine a sight as Wells made with the evening sun, I had hoped she would roll to a stand.........but no, up the handle went & off to Norden, so did she!

The look on the station staff's face when I walked up to her & pointed out to her we actually needed to be on that train to get to Norden was priceless.

But fair play to the station staff, they did sort the situation out & in the end got us a taxi to Norden - so a thank you to them for their professionalism.

Slippage in the TT I can understand & live with, but a train not stopping as booked?.......... I'm guessing a few nuts will be inserted in various vices & the screws turned as a result of this! In the end I got home 2 hours later than planned. :Banghead:

Any way, my take on the unexpected through train https://www.flickr.com/photos/duty_druid/33433406510/in/dateposted-public/ had I known it wasn't stopping, I'd've turned round with the camera & got a rather nice going away shot as she opened up, instead of putting the camera down expecting to get on the train........................... :(

Some brilliant photos posted, was a great gala , Swanage has became my favourite railway. 60103 would look good in a shot with corfe castle.

Was it called corfe castle before they put a castle there?

There has been a castle there for a very long time! King Edward the Martyr was murdered at Corfe Castle as far back as 978AD

A few more from me, from a day that didn't pan out as planned.

The loco's I really wanted to phot because what unfolded eluded me & I only managed to get to one half decent lineside spot :Arghh: , so it seemed that Manston prevailed, not that I'm complaining, as its the 1st time I've managed to get any shots of her in steam.

Close to 700 visitors over the two days at Herston and very generous donations to the overhaul of the 257 Squadron and other SLL locomotives .

Corfe means 'gap' in old English, so Corfe has always been there, hence Corfe river, it's only when someone built a holiday home on it that it had the name Castle added.

There is a brilliant walk I do every once in a while when staying in Swanage.

Walk out of town along the road to Ulwell, then to Corfe along the ridge path. Great views down into the valley with the train going by and the other way over Poole Harbour to Bournemouth.

As you get near Corfe, you see very clearly how Corfe Castle plugged the gap in the hills and so was the key to defending Purbeck.

And then, of course, you reward yourself with a pint in one of the Corfe hostelries before catching the train back to Swanage.......:)
