A very long day out: about seven hours each way if you start and finish at West Brompton and three hours in Gloucester.

That schedule is a bit of a bugger as it looks like you can join at Woking on the outward run but on the return run it goes straight through and you have to leave the train at Basingstoke to get back to Woking.

The Cumbrian Mountain express, when running via the S&C, picks up at Preston, but does not call there on the return, passengers are given a ticket for the service train from Blackburn to Preston. This has been happening for years and seems to work OK.

It shouldn't need a diesel, it's coming direct from Southall. Maybe one to drag the train out of Southall, but after that a diesel wouldn't be required.

I'm confused (not hard I know). We have 45407 coming down today, then going back with 46100 on Tuesday 21st, on Monday 20th WCR Southall are sending something out to pick something up from Norwich.. Where is 5699 in this mix?

I would of thought they would have sent it to Crewe today to meet 5407, and then double head down together to save running 2 separate moves. The diesel being sent out of Southall on Monday is helping with Std 4 76084 which is moving York to Sheringham, going up to drag it backwards to Cromer.

Tickets are available from Bath to Gloucester and return for £59. This section includes Horfield bank. The incline can be a challenge for steam charters especially when it comes off Rhubarb curve and has to slowly negotiate Dr Days Jct. at the bottom of the bank. <BJ>

At Staines planning to join as POTD but I hear rumours of diesel on back. Can anyone confirm?

Can't help on that but remember that the trip with 45407 last Saturday was with the RTC. They used dual brake stock. This one is Steam Dreams and a different set of coaches that I believe is only vacuum. So there may well be a diesel in the consist.

45407 is dual braked whereas 45699 is vac only.

Then that's a first and, of course, good news.
