i think you will get tour operators deciding to request 34046 instead of 35018 for that exact reason, unles someone is playing games and it turns up for its test run in BR green

This comes back to the perennial questions,
1, How many passengers actually don't care as long as it's steam?
2, How many passengers actually don't care what colour the loco is?
3, How many will actually refuse to book because they consider it the 'wrong' colour?

3 will be a very small minority whose number will of no significance to the loading.

1 & 2 will therefore have an enjoyable day out behind steam and wonder what's wrong with those in group 3.

I believe that some on this forum grossly over estimate the numbers of passengers who are swayed by the minutia.

If black is the colour 35018 is released into traffic maybe it will be for the duration of its running in and proving while fitters are still clambering over the paintwork. Once it has bedded in a final finish might then be applied?
Or it could just be another act of defiance .....

What you will get is people who as you say will not care as long as it's steam, then again those who will book because its 35018, but will then moan on social media about it being the wrong colour , then of course you will get the die hard, ones who will not travel behind it for that exact reason, more inportant is the message, we have a very special occasion this year, that everyone would want 35018 to be part of, but it will be in some measure ruined for many because someone decided, its my engine i will paint it any colour i choice, where as most loco owners prefer to be authentic in what livery their engine carries.

A trip behind an engine, devoid of people moaning that X isn't in Y livery, rivet patterns are wrong, the lining is 0.1mm too thick, etc etc....

Sounds good to me. Where do I sign?

So you'll have no problem with 46233 being repainted to match the Jones Goods then. :)

BR weren't fooled by the "mixed traffic" classification that Bulleid used. They were 8P under the BR scheme.

i think there's a case for locos to be turned out in their owner's own liveries rather than historic liveries.

Many years ago a Marketing person said to me, on hearing a loco fresh into traffic would be black 'On great, another black loco - we need some variety of loco colours for marketing materials'. I wouldn't have said the person in question was an enthusiast but knew the potential effect of uniformity - too many black locos or indeed possibly even BR Green locos will at least make promoting trips harder.

As we are told the profit is in the last coach of a mainline excursion, deterring potential passengers by the livery choice could have a noticeable effect for the Promoter even if the number of passengers who it influences is small - why create a potential disincentive to people booking when postings on here suggest there are plenty already?

I'm not sure what 'Jones Goods' livery is but certainly she looked great when in Black, whatever shade that was, and as I have said before the colour doesn't matter when you are on board.

That in part is what i can not understand, 35018 could make david smith a lot of money, especially in 2017, if it appears in time, so why jepodise it just to proove a point, that being, its my engine i will do as i please, every loco owner seems to be ok with portraying their loco in an suitable livery that it once , or others in the class may have carried in its life, no MN once rebuilt wore anything than Green, ok 3505 went blue for a while , but historically the only correct scheme is BR express loco Green, and to many its the only proper livery that can be applied once rebuilt. as Bean counter points out margins are very tight on charters is it sound financial business to set out to make that even worse by deciding to paint a loco black rather than green , knowing that doing that could lessern the profit availible ?

Has Galatea suffered because of her colour, did any of the passengers on the Cumbrian Coast refuse to travel, or have a thoroughly miserable trip. There have also been complaints about Leander because she is in the 'wrong' colour.

This froth seems a bit premature since the loco has not been seen in public yet but then maybe the black is a form of stealth camoflage so it can go unnoticed whilst on test? Only time will tell.
On a connected matter, has any indication been given as to which loco may be next for shopping once the MN is done? Perm any one from the 8F, Tangers, Bodmin or the Scot?

Objection! Thats the wrong color> The Jones goods never carried that livery in service - it should be green ( and I don't mean Stroudley's Improved Engine Green!).
You can't possibly paint a Duchess in a livery that is a phoney one for a completely different loco. What will they think of next - leaving the EU? - Donald Trump as US President? I don't know!!

8F if it is to meet commitments, then the grapevine suggests that attention will turn to 34016. I think 34067 has had its chips for a while.

I quite liked 70000 in black.
