no they are creating an authentic replica, you are bastardising a Class 27 to make it look like a class 21 and planning to number it as a Class 22 .

47XX please don't take offence. I think the GWR rebuilds are awesome! Had a look round the 47XX the other week at Llangollen and it is truly a magnificent piece of steam era engineering by a great team, keeping real skills alive.

I suppose you could say the same about the group who are butchering a class 37 to make a Baby Deltic. Personally I will be happy if these groups succeed. The Steam/Diesel transition spanned my early years, and it was the failures that made it interesting as much as the successes. If the modernisation programme had followed a rational course we would have had far fewer classes, and it would have been pretty boring. The sheer variety of modern traction was quite amazing. If the reproduction NBL locos and Baby Deltic look and sound like the original then it will be a worthwhile exercise.

The LMS 10000 replica is going to use frames from a Class 58. Does this make it a Frankenstein :)

So there are going to be lots of Frankensteins around (with a bit of luck). But so long as they look and sound like the original, then does it matter that they have been built using salvaged components and materials?

The Iron Duke is a Frankenstein, but it helps to fill a real gap in preservation.

Were the baby deltics a failure or did they just run out of work and being a small class were easily dispensed with?

They were problematic, and were all out of service for a while. They certainly weren't a roaring success, but as a trainspotter in the sixties they were a bit of a local delicacy on trips to London.

A pity if that is the case (the website news has not been updated for a year): it's a massive shame that 10000/10001 ended up being scrapped because there was a mad rush to preserve what was rapidly disappearing (steam) and perhaps no-one cared for these usurpers, important though they were?

You could also use the term Hybrid instead of Frankenstein, for these long lost railway engines and coaches .

you could. In the case of the Brighton Belle of course, they are modifying the running gear to suit modern operation but it's still a 5BEL. In the case of a diesel chopped about to make it into a look a like of a different class, then that' s not quite the same.

I guess it depends whether it looks like the class it is upposed to represent and how much of the engine, bogies, control equipment and traction equipment is as used in the original loco.

you don't get my point...The Brighton Belle is an original unit updated. A replica made from another class of loco is not the same thing at all.
