Maybe not so unrealistic as you think

That is of course bellow the foot plating ,wheels side rods etc. Above the foot plating I cant see that would make much difference in maintance That is is one thing I notice on my regular visits to heritage lines is that loco's above the foot plating are mostly in high shine condition ,wheels and side rods are not what I would call clean .Drivers and fitters do not want to get plastered in oil and grease when going about there duties. I once heard a story that before WW2 ,in the depression when there was high unemployment ,a foreman at a shed would go round a loco' after it had been cleaned with a white handkerchief and rub it round the back of a side rod ,if it was slightly stained the cleaning gang would be in trouble.
At large cities in the fifties when there was plenty of jobs ,cleaners were in very short supply ,the ones that did start were soon offered labouring jobs if not out firing .Ash pit ,sweeping up ,removing fire bars ,coal stage etc. They were given full mans money for this and not many refused.

You missed the deliberate mistake, 48624 was coupled to a Fowler tender during BR days but when it comes to recreating the period this is as good as it gets. Under that dirty black poster paint is that awful red livery.

I think most people can live with the compromise of some fake muck at gala/charter time but clean in normal operations TBH, history is most certainly looked at through rose tinted spectacles and prob best to brush the worser aspects of it under the carpet normally.

Never having done the job, I would have imagined that drivers and fitters would be more likely to be plastered in oil and grease if everything is dirty?

nothing wrong with a bit of road dirt above the wheelsets, I mean not everything was as shiny and clean back in the 60s.

Another one of mine. Bit more difficult that one, but it worked.

I'm open for bookings if anyone wants a loco doing ;)

That one must have been a challenge and didn't someone damage the paint getting it off? If that's true, at least it means it's now in a sensible livery.

Taw Valley didn't look like that at all. I have tried to find a picture of her at the SVR in the weathered livery on the Internet but so far I haven't found one. I guess it wasn't that popular with photographers.

It was a bit. Doing it in January didn't help too much! Yes, I was told someone used some sort of cleaning solution on it, even though they were told countless times just to wash it off with water.

That's clean compared to an SY 2-8-2 I saw at a Beijing quarry a few years ago.
