Steam Dreams with 46233 to Kingswear Sat 3 Sep

Just posted provisional timings for this trip behind Duchess of Sutherland at www.uksteam.info. Now via Bristol both ways. It looks as if the steam legs are Bristol-Kingswear-TAunton although this remains to be confirmed.

The RTT suggest some that she's joining at Bristol, coming off at Newton Abbot and running down to
Laira for servicing, then she rejoins at Newton Abbot and comes off at Bristol. Gauging issue perhaps?

How bizarre to have to do the South Devon Banks in both directions, engine + POB, just to turn an engine!!!

 

It would be good if the diesel could run light from Bristol to Newton Abbot and return. <BJ>

 

Blimey. Bristol to Newton is just 94 miles and if the locomotive is coming off at Taunton on its return, the total mileage is 145. Not great but I guess just about okay. If she goes through to Bristol then we are just short of 200 miles at 188. Sounds much better.

 

Gauging issues at Torquay I have heard?

 

Shame, would have been curious to see if Goodrington claimed another victim, though LMS seems to do better than LNER/Southern Pacifics.

Quick question, does 46233 have a speed restriction through Teignmouth? May go there as cover will probably be the important thing...

Anyone on train? Presumably 47580 remained on the rear to runaround at NA. No LE move to Hackney Yard. Just watched a clip at Flax Bourton and sure enough 47580 was on the rear, not appearing to be assisting there.

 

Yes, 47.580 was at the rear when I filmed the train at Flax Bourton this morning.

11 coaches today, of which 10 were maroon. A far cry from the days when we had several sets of stock with mixed liveries. As I recall, one set was known as the 'Pilkington' set and another the 'Rainbow' set. <BJ>

 

The Pilkington set was delightful - NOT!

 

But they did have the unique coffin lid tables on an overhead rack in each compartment (tangled in the netting most times) that did serve as somewhere to put the beer glasses.
