Re 4771: Where did that rumour come from? Never heard anything along those lines. The cylinder needs major repair or replacement but I've never heard anyone say that the boiler is in a bad way.

Re 850: Still an NRM loco - what made you think otherwise?

Keith - sorry for that, just something i'd heard of a fellow enthusiast that's all. Serves me right for believing dud gen haha.

Think the cylinder problems will probs keep it permanently sidelined & 850 couldn't remember if the nrm had flogged it as it's been out on loan for years now. Also 30777 sir lamiel, gorgeous loco & always performs well on any days it's rostered to be out at the gcr.

Truro has a poorly boiler and needs new tyres
229 is quite tired under that casing as anyone who saw her on her last day in 1998 will recall
49395 is quite happy on display for the moment
    4771 - don't listen to rumours
    850 will go again

Click on "Upload a file" under the editing box and take it from there - pretty certain it should work with any format, i.e. PDF, Excel etc.

I do not believe that there is any urgency with regard to what might be overhauled next. The A3 has just been completed and with a locomotive already being worked on in the workshop the NRM can wisely focus on other things for a couple of years if not more. So why the impatience? None of the locomotives mentioned are deteriorating to any significant extent. Just about any engine can be returned to working order, but as a museum this not always an option that you would consider. Remember conservative and education. And then there are always the financial considerations.

Yes, I would like to see 4771 working again, powerful, compact and unique but I have seen and travelled behind it many times. I know that it can be repaired and so wait patiently. And there are so many other things to absorb my attention. P2 builds, Welsh Pony, a 47xx and so on and on. Fortunate to see all this? Oh, yes.

Emmm....the NRM can't just "flog" items in its' collection without going through many processes. There are many NRM locos which have been on loan for many years to many different railways - it doesn't mean they have been sold (or could be sold), or that they are for sale.

If I could offer you a little advice: I think you should think a little more, before you put some of these thoughts/rumours into writing...

I'd love to see the Q7 let out again.

Really? I don't wish to be rude and am genuinely curious, but that was the estimated finishing time before it left the GWSR - surely it's going to take a bit longer now it's at Sharpness, with less facilities and cover than when it was at the GWSR. Not wishing to be rude about the chaps at Sharpness, I'm sure they're doing a great job, but I'd have expected it to take a little longer now, it's only reasonable.

Think you might be right. Its some Southern heap all the same.

I think the Q7 won't be going anywhere. Its all safely inside Head of Steam at Darlington and nicely under cover. If anything we have the Q6 in traffic and while the NRM has some nice NER stuff like Aerolite and the M1/D17 these too will be plinthed. As a result, I would turn attention to getting the J21 back in traffic and give the project that is exploring its options support to overhaul this and return it to steam as its condition at the moment is not good at all. It needs work just to effectively be stored and as a result would be a good candidate to restore to traffic.
