Who would have thought a pair of 73s could look so smart in 2016?

The DBC driver appears to know which levers to pull and push, as we have arrived at Carnforth on time

Not 73s as we "old uns" know them though. The body shell is about the only component that survived the rebuild into a 73/9.

Much like some of the Thompson rebuilds...or Flying Scotsman!

Tongue in cheek I know but at least Flying Scotsman is still a steam loco with its original power plant. The 73/9 has had its EE lump replaced by an MTU and AFAIK not able to run on the juice as all electric gear has been removed.

From vid on YouTube at Wigan NW load 11 with no diesel, stock looking v smart.
Must be the first time DBC/DBS have run with steam heat for very long time?
Hope everyone has a good day.
Interested to hear how she does up Shap and Beattock.

I don't think the 3rd rail gubbins has been removed although the Scottish ones appear to be different to the others. I'm not an expert on contemporary upgrades so don't know for sure. There's bound to be someone along who does.

Average speed up Shap 19mph. Very poor coal, speed dropped to 15mph a couple of times. Fire presumably dirty. However, only 8 mins late, so overall, they've done well.

Wonder if it's just the Scottish 73s that can;t run on the juice. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

We know about Carnforth coal, don't we? Either way, the climb of Shap was something that probably wouldn't have happened under the original RTC/WC plan. By that I mean a pure steam run. So winners all round.

Clearly needed a shove from the Tebay banker if there was one available today.

Apparently the steam has jacked at Carlisle and diesel (67) forward to Edinburgh. Can anyone confirm?

No. Clean steam. Just waited for a new batch of coal and a clear path. Should be a good run.

If coal is from the last mined at Kellingley it can vary - reasonable or absolutely shocking quality.

There's two rebuilds, the GBRF ones with 1 MTU engine and the NR ones with 2 Cummins. I think one retains the 3rd rail equipment, but I can't find any direct reference to it by searching 'class 73 rebuilds'

1Z32 dep Carlisle at 1229. Should have dep at 1137. 67018 arrived at Carlisle 1225, is working 0Z34 Arpley - Craigentinny for return leg of charter later. Looks like it will shadow 1Z32. Info from Railcam signalling diagram. HTH, Andrew N
