Bloody hell Steve, you don't hang about - at the time you posted this - I was heading into Four Marks where some unfortunate had been tugged by the Old Bill for trying to get to Ropley in a hurry!!

A taster from me....... its not about the loco's t/f - but the contrast between sunlight & shadow = I had a feeling there would be something in the exhaust! :)

I never get tired of seeing or travelling with the T9 either. Can we keep her?
I did hear a rumour yesterday that the MHR may be getting another NRM loco to play with......

Whatever your thoughts a gala on Feb 14th does rather rule out potential customers who may have a better half with romantic inclinations and not s day on the lineside !!!

Only a quick snap with my phone, but I really enjoyed the Sunday of the Gala. Not TOO busy and some sunshine, even if it was getting cold towards the end of the day.

The visitors looked right at home, especially the Bluebell contribution

Good to see Dave and Steve up at Rook Wood last night, some rather nice light to be had!

Only had time to edit one photo thus far, 45379 and 34007 climbing Medstead Bank with the last 'in-the-light' train of the weekend...

    45379 34007.001.jpg

No idea when the video will go live, as I'm busy for the next few days, but I'll make sure this one goes live...

Well, you certainly win the prize for most unusual photo spot so far. Is that a faint reflection of the Alton panel ahead of the T9?

I wondered if anyone would comment on that!

I am a West Somerset and Swanage signalman. Trainer signalman Rod Wicks and his trainee (who's name I am shamefully unable to remember) were kind enough to allow me a brief visit to Alton box, at just the right moment!

This was my first visit to a MHR Gala. Previous visits have been on quieter days when Alton box has not been open.

Here's a shot taken a few moments later, looking the other way from the same spot. Careful inspection of the panel will show the double-header at the far end of the panel heading towards Medstead, and 41312 and the 'local' (I think) signalled from the Meon Loop into Platform 3.

Box plainly spotless, in the best SR traditions.

    kind regards

Interesting shot Robin, Alton is the one box I haven't been in on the MHR - I spotted a couple of volunteers from the Bluebell 'photting the Q past the box at Alton on Saturday- the recent tree felling in the vicinity has opened up a few possibilities for departure shots.
I was further down the line near Rookwood lane on Sunday afternoon (along woth Duty Druid) and caught 30120 and 30541 there.

So much more accomplished photography than mine, but my phone is always with me.

The geography of Alton box (rather like Minehead) makes a peek through the door rather difficult, and I was grateful for the privilege of a visit, and so happy to make the shot available.

Well well you never know who's around! I thought I saw another body in the box at Alton as we departed, but as the Q is left hand drive I was in the wrong position to be sure, and was more concerned with getting the train underway.

The goods train earlier in the day (see picture above) was one of the best runs I've had in a while. That train is 240tons (equivalent to 6 Mk1s) so not a featherweight load. As we passed the photographers, the second injector had just gone on, and with the needle painted on the redline we carried on to the top with no lessening of pace. All credit to the Bluebell she's a grand engine. Noisy though, my ears are still ringing, but the grin appears to be permanent. Best bit of the day was the discovery that Maunsell steam reversers work, unlike his successor's version.

We forget at our peril how 'connected' the heritage railway world is. I usually get at least one request a week for a legal 'steer' on something or other from a Railway other than the two I regularly volunteer on.

Weekends are often hard working time for me, preparing for the next week's case or cases (such will be the case this weekend) but I could see a few days ahead that I had Sunday free and the weather forecast looked good. I drove up through the murk on Saturday evening, stayed in an hotel in Alton and had a fab day nosing around the MHR and watching both the show :)and the public .

I did enjoy sitting in the up side waiting room at Ropley (by the stove) listening to husband telling (?) wife and female friend that all the engines had been hidden underground in a Welsh coal mine near Cardiff until rescued by the National Railway Museum and raffled off to railway enthusiasts.... Had they just got off the real ale train?:Wacky:

Here's another quick snap - presumably there hasn't been a steam train in Hampshire for a few years....:)

I've been wanting to visit the Mid Hants Railway for a long time but the distance has deterred me. The T9, several other locos I'd never seen before and the prospect of being able to catch three exhibitions en route made my mind up so I set off on Friday morning, an Arriva Club 55 ticket taking me to Birmingham then over to Moor Street station for the class 68 hauled Chiltern service to Marylebone, tube to South Kensington to view the two Julia Margaret Cameron exhibitions showing at the V&A and the Science Museum to commemorate the bicentenary of her birth. Both free of charge, comprehensive and featuring original prints. Then down into deepest Hampshire.

After a winter of damp greyness, I was hoping the south of England would provide some respite from the Snowdonian gloom but Saturday was cold and wet while back home it was sunny, such is life. Perhaps the weather deterred the crowds because there was plenty of room on the trains, I was expecting a packed gala like Great Central a fortnight earlier. I made two complete return trips, stopped off at both intermediate stations, and rode behind and photographed every locomotive though conditions were not conducive to good pictures. Despite the wintry weather, it was an enjoyable day on a friendly line with attractive scenery.

I returned home on Sunday, a bright sunny day, stopping off in Birmingham for the E.R. Hughes "Enchanted Dreams" exhibition at the Art Gallery. I liked the blue dreamlike fantasy paintings but not as much as his wonderful portraits in watercolour and chalks. He's not an artist I was familiar with, nephew of Arthur Hughes and it seems he was an all round decent bloke too, helping Holman Hunt to finish some of his paintings when his eyesight deteriorated. A great three days but probably my one and only visit to this line because of the time and cost required.

What a superb gala. Apart from visiting the MHR on a Matt Allen/Warwick Falconer photo charter a year or two back I've not visited the MHR as a passenger for almost 30 years. It was a great day out and my thanks to all the volunteers who made it happen. Sunday was the day when sun finally made an appearance and it provided some excellent photo opportunities. I was somewhat apprehensive about what i might achieve without a lineside pass for this railway but I'm happy with my results.
Follow this link for my photo collection.

It wont be another 30 years before I return that's for sure.
