Nver seen a picture of an ER Pacific on the SR in 1953. B1s and V2s were loaned while the WR sent a few Britannias. In fact, I raised the issue of whether an A1 had ever run on the former SR before Tornado's appearance and no one could recall seeing or hearing of one.

As far as I'm aware the only LNER Pacifics to run on the Southern were Blue Peter, I think in 1966 and SNG after preservation in 1967

More than that. Mallard and Kingfisher have been on the Southern. I went with Kingfisher to Exeter in 1966. Took Woking at 80 on the way back. Word is that the signallers didn't recognise it as a steamer and let it through. (Those who know stop-all junction will get the point of the anecdote.)

So Gresley Pacifics are no strangers to the Southern.

I was actually at the station some 45mins early, so went for a wander (no pubs nearby!) and discovered this spot on the up-side of the station.

Makes a change from the more normal 'train between the platforms' shot.

It was said that one of the signallers was a steam enthusiast but only ever had a Brownie 127 with a max shutter speed of 1/25th second. So he made Woking "stop all junction" so he could get decent photos of all the steam hauled trains, including those that were booked through non stop.

    :)
