I can only think the shunt of 46233 and stock at Howe & Co. took longer than expected, as there appeared to be a good 10 minutes grace to be clear of the the single line section at Culgaith for the service train coming in the opposite direction.

It must have been frustrating to let the charter leave Carlisle, followed 5 minutes later by a service train, only to have to sit and let it go ahead 5 miles later. Maybe they wanted the charter out of Carlisle for space.

46233 was held at Howe and Co signal box for about an hour due to a late running unit in front of him hence he then had to wait for the Northbound unit .

Excellent work Steve and what a bark the Duchess was making on the shots on the S&C.

Some good video there thanks. I waited for it at Ribblehead and finally saw it, well sort of, from the comfort of the Station Inn whilst thawing out! I guess the single line working for the next few weeks may well have implications for the remaining CME's, at least so far as timekeeping is concerned.

It's a pity they can't find a path the other way round, north up the S & C and south over Shap, at least it would cut out the need to reverse.

Well we had the lot today, snow, sleet, hail and a freezing wind, the joys of linesiding I suppose. LMS 8P Class 4-6-2 No. 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' seemingly struggling on the climb to Shap

Unusual pace for the Duchess up Shap ! Maybe a couple of slips ? Or poor rail conditions ?

Superb footage on here from the usual chaps. Very testing conditions on Shap today but still a privilege to be there to witness the Duchess slogging it up to Shap summit. Two shots from me, the first at Shap Wells and then the late return through Kirkby Stephen station at 12800 ISO handheld.

Good to see no diesel and wisps from the steam heat. So it can be done!
