I see that SD now have (mostly) updated the page for this tour to show Salisbury as the new destination and 45407 as the motive power instead of 61306. No indication of times yet, though.

At least it's steam hauled, someone should nominate Riley Steam Rescue Services for the Heritage Railway awards next year

I have no idea Danny?.....I did not plan nor request this work?......we are merely replacing the B1 as traction as a last moment request, I would sincerely hope that if the train is planned to be overloaded for one class 5 loco it has assistance?.....I don't want my loco spoiling or any delay attributions?

No argument there Ian, just a bit of banter. Even the mighty aren't immune from the unplanned.
As you said a while ago better planning by your customers would have resulted in the best outcome ie two fives, all steam power. At least the passengers will get a loco completing its duty.

It's booked for load 12 with DL assistance. Whether or not it will be 12 will depend on how many tickets sold but I guess the DL will be there anyway. It's DL from Hanwell Bridge in the evening.
The trip to Kent next week is also 12 and DL.

So a Merry Christmas to all pure steam enthusiasts in the south. That must mean everything in December that has run in the south of England or out of a London terminus will have had a diesel attached.

But talking to the Charter Tour Companies, forward planning for Dec 2016 will be very different!...;)

No steam hauled trains????? (Kidding I hope; though this is the first December in 32 years that we haven't been out on Steam Hauled Trains in the South)

This is probably the time to move nearer to either Birmingham or Crewe!

The other things that are causing problems are the growing practices of starting the train in the suburbs so passengers don't have the extra expense of travelling to London, days that are too long for the steam loco and crews plus routes and destinations that need reversals or stock movements. Add to that the use of underpowered locomotives for the length of train that the operators want to use and you are where you are.

Whilst I am sure that the business model will have dictated what the companies have decided to do, to some extent they have triggered some of these issues that the TOC - primarily meaning WCRC - has been forced to respond to.

I won't say that the tour operators have lost the plot a bit with steam but their choices haven't made it easy for the TOC, in my view.
