May pop out to see this tomorrow. I did the June trip from Victoria to Bristol with load 9 and no diesel. What's the plan for tomorrow?

Well those Steam Dreams times are the only ones we have at the moment. Nothing appeared on RTT, Not even ECS from Southall to Padington

All the details are available at www.ukdteam.info (as usual) .........

There is a path in the system for the ECS diesel to return from Paddington to Southall after departure of the train, and back again in the evening. Also ECS at Bristol does not require a diesel, so maybe no diesel assistance for the B1 ?

I don't know why nothing has appeared yet at Realtime Trains.

As far as I know it's booked to be double-headed B1+Diesel because of the load being considered too much for the B1 alone. As the B1 arrived at Southall facing London on friday it will have to be turned before departure.[/QUOTE]

The ECS has just arrived into Paddington. Confirmation is on OpentrainTimes. If Realtime Trains haven't got the train on their system, OpenTrainTimes is the best alternative for the progression of the entire trip.

A friend on the train uploaded a photo of the train at Paddington... Looks like a Class 47 on the inside (between loco and train)

According to a post above by Andover, due to load being too much for a B1. This trip was due be hauled by 46201 then 70000, so load must have been based on at least a class 7.

I spoke with the driver of the class 47 at Twyford and he says he is only there to provide heat and not to help the B1. Proof of the pudding is the eating, and I have to say that the diesel did nothing on leave Twyford. It was all down to the B1. It would be nice to think it could stay that way especially as this Great Western mainline is like a billiard table in the main with few inclines to worry about.

If that is the case why couple it inside the B1? I thought that only happened if the diesel was expected to provide a substantial amount of assistance. Don't like diesels on steam trains at all but if they must be there I prefer to see them at the back where you can try to forget about them!

Quite happy to have them behind the tender if required. They tend to hide in there.

I have it on good authority that WCRC believes that the correct load for a class 5 locomotive is a total of 10 (9 + POB). The above video shows a load of 12.

Flat or not, this load on the GWML is therefore inappropriate for a Class 5 on its own. Today's diesel is where it is in the train because it is likely to have to provide power away from stops and checks. So as Andover has already said WCRC had to do what it has done because of the load. (The same also happened on a St David's Day trip once when a late substitution of a Class 5 on a long train meant that a diesel was added. In that case it was also because of the tight original 75 mph timings.)

A good steady climb up to Savernake. With the equivalent of 15 or 16 on the back, considering the 47 was doing nothing at all, she did well.

Like to see the speeds up Savernake if no diesel input. 61306 did a great job earlier in the year with 10, but 15/16? 30 would have been good. Got any footage to post later Kristian? Feel a bit sorry for Mayflower. It must have the unenviable record of the most diesel assisted tours of any engine in any year!!!
