Thanks for the compliments ! Despite the cloud trying to make an appearance the S&C can still provide some rare periods of sunshine.

Does anyone have any more details of the Earl's performance on Shap? From video evidence, a very rough guess would be that 5043 was holding somewhere just above the mid-30's as it approached the last half mile of the climb to MP37.25. And elsewhere I have seen a quote in a commentary accompanying a YouTube clip
that puts the overall Tebay North-Shap Summit time at 5 minutes 26 seconds (not sure if that means MP37.25, Summit sign, or some other timing point)

The Earl has definitely got some "Previous" when it comes to flattening Shap - it went over the top at 40 mph with Load 10/ 382 gross on its first foray to Carlisle in June 2009, and in doing so got itself ranked at No.8 in the all-time Top 10 "Trial Section" Foot of Grayrigg (MP13) - Top of Shap (MP37.25) preservation era league table. I wonder if this outing achieved anything approaching this level of performance?

The App on my phone reckoned "about" 37MPH over the summit, I so I'd suggest mid - high 30's taking inaccurate readings into account.

I recall the "ScottishDieselCastle" was largely the fault of some Gresley device igniting the WCML north of Carslisle the Tuesday before.

I think you have missed out 'Don'tWorryIWillTaketheTrainForwardonmyOwn' Castle after Princess Hotbox decided to sit down at Carlisle.

As for 'Stanier's revolutionary railway' - revolutionary maybe to the technological backwaters of the NW, Stanier was just following what he had learnt on the GWR for the previous 30 years (including axlebox design sadly!)......

    What a load of ********!!

IIRC the runoutofcoalcastle was due to the castle returning alone due to one of staniers finest not being able to keep up on the grade.... With a hot box I believe!!
Scottish diesel castle, well how many scottishdieselduchesses or A4s or scots have we seen?
And as for hotboxcastle, there seems to have been far more hot boxes with stanier locos than any others this year, along with steaming issues, one notable on shap, which i suppose you would put down to the coal or oil??

For some of what I have just read above go to tyseley, support 5043, 6201 and 71000 and stop complaining about a princess or castle hot box. That isn't too hard with open days at Tyseley locomotive works coming soon.

Speaking for myself I have been giving donations to a few of my steam train interests because that is the best thing I can do given where I live.
