Grabbed a couple of hours to get over to the SVR to see 46100, the loco is superbly finished and looks very ex-works. As mentioned upthread, it does sound a wee bit
like an electric!! There was hardly any exhaust sound to speak of as it climbed Eardington Bank, just a very perceptible traction motor like whine - I've never heard anything like it before. Still, got some acceptable photos.

I was told that the loco will be hauling it's first full train on Monday.

    Cheers,

Would it be something to do with the air pump gubbins?

And, yes, she does look nice.:)

I believe it has borrowed 46165's tender.

46100 looks stunning. A great job by all concerned.
Have to say that she does sound rather strange on the videos I have seen so far; a squeak that can no doubt easily be cured and a grinding/binding sound which sounds a bit nasty. Has she been fitted with a generator like a Bulleid Pacific I wonder? Hope the sound is nothing serious.

I don't think so Mr. D.D., the air pump is steam driven and will pant when in operation, also, as it was not hauling air-braked stock the pump was not in use.

    Cheers,

Yes, 46165 had a welded tender tank.

Looking back at photos from her brief spell at Llangollen in 2009 the tank appears welded and the addition plate is in situ (a few hundred extra gallons I presume)

    Not my photos:

The whirring noise is caused by tyre turning marks, it will wear off. Looks a noise machine, would be nice to drive.

As a piece of restoration engineering that is stunning. She looks like someone has just taken a brand new model out of a box - and she runs like it as well - hardly a breath of steam out of place - must be absolutely spot on steam tight all over. I'm wondering if the low noise is simply something we wouldn't normally hear due to all the other noise of escaping steam etc we get on more worn locos - something like the injector being on a bit as she runs etc. Although the squeak is more interesting at the end of the second clip - crew clearly not concerned though.

The only real criticism I have - that numeral 6 looks a bit odd on the cabside. Real nitpick. Aside from that she looks and sounds superb.

You talking about that popping sound Bittern makes? I believe it's the automatic drain valves on the air reservoirs, sometimes known as spitter valves.

46100 does look rather good. Strangely, my clearest memory of her previously is of looking in the firebox door at Bressingham (when I was quite small), and being amazed at how loooong it was.
