The SVR is ideal for running in - a line 16 miles long gives a loco plenty of chance to stretch its legs and with gradients of 1 in 100, if you hook 7 or 8 coaches behind the loco, it will have to work a bit. If things work well with 46100, who knows, the Hosking team might run 34046 there in later in the year. Following up three Manors with three rebuilt WC/BBs would be rather appealing to some of us! Oh, and there's also a big blue 4-6-0 that might benefit from a few miles running in somewhere before being let loose on the national network...

I have to say that I'm surprised anyone sends a 4-6-0 or a 4-6-2 anywhere on a low loader unless there is absolutely no alternative. Good for the SVR though, however it gets there.

Having worked for many years at a railway that did not have a mainline connection, but did regularly bring in large locos by road; 4-6-2s, 4-6-0s, 2-10-0, 2-8-0 etc, I believe that the issue has more to do with the quality of the haulage contractors ramps etc rather than road haulage as such.

"Absolutely no alternative happens" on many occasions for railways without a main line connection or when moving a loco not certified for movement on the national network.

Indeed, running in on a Heritage line is certainly to be recommended for "snagging". But I believe the big blue 4-6-0 is rumoured to be heading to a different heritage line (eventually).

A friend was on the train going from Crewe north on the WCML and messaged to say Royal Scot was outside in steam this afternoon.

Cheers Gav, Just what I need to read before bedtime! The interrogation will begin tomorrow with 'Who's Scot?' Joking aside is there a better looking loco than a rebuilt Scot? I think its a 3 way tie between a Jube, Scot or Black 5 certainly for me anyway.

I think I have declared my love for Charlie Colletts 4-6-0's before they are rather nice. I'm slightly biased towards Mr Stanier and the LMS though I cant remember who said it but the description of the Big Lizzies as an 'Iron fist in a silk glove' I really couldn't have put it better myself. I think my 'Scot' obsession comes from I havent seen one in steam yet! Seen 6115 at TYS but it wasnt in action then(1992)

You have something to look forward to then, Matt...on a railway a little further south than Bury!:)

A Crewe North driver once said to me that a Scot can do everything a Lizzie can do, except the last bit of what a Lizzie can do. Having seen them come into Crewe from Euston with fifteen on, I have some idea of what he meant. Read the late "Piccolo Pete" Johnson's books to get the true footplate flavour.

    Regards,

Looking at the Crewe Heritage centre web cam this morning and the Duchess is nearest with just a faint trace of smoke drifting out of the chimney, normal slow light up procedure for her I guess. However there seem to be two further sources of steam/smoke in the background but it's impossible to see what they are, one maybe Royal Scot, but what could the other be?

I also agree. Was simply talking about 'best case' scenario that obviously cannot apply in all instances but I do believe that if you are into risk management, it could be an issue.

As an aside, Clan Line has never been on a low loader and as far as the MNLPS is concerned, never will.

Strange to say but although the return of Flying Scotsman is a prospect to look forward to, in my mind, it will be eclipsed by 46100 going main line, whenever that is. And I guess that just illustrates the fact that different people have different preferences which is why the heritage movement is so diverse and interesting, in my view.

Looking forward to seeing 46100 working on the main line once again. The last time I saw it was at Manchester Victoria in 1960 when it was double headed with 46154 on a Newcastle-Liverpool express.
    Just imagine, 46100+46115 over Standedge:)

    Let the good times roll!
