Noooo I mean the high peaks of mountains, there seems to be some confusion in Hampshire, they keep referring to grassy knolls as Alps! ;)

We likes our Alps! M4M is the highest station in Southern England. Says so on MHR website so must be true.

I think the debate about Meon Valley was less about the tree clearance than the new surface, a case of going from the sublime (claggy muddy footpth) to the ridiculous (road-like track) As I said, I haven't ridden or walked the path recently, so am only going on what has been in the local paper. I might venture down to Droxford when I have sme spare time and have a look myself. Having recently seen the primroses, cowslips, spurge and even sedums bloom on the Mid-Hants embankments where thickets of elder, field maple and dogwood have been cut back, I am one for keeping shrubs under control before they all become trees.

Have a read of "The Making of the English Landscape" by WG Hoskins. Slightly dated now, but a real eye-opener in terms of understanding the complex overlay of events that have resulted in what we think of as "pristine" countryside!
