It's being built to mainline standards according to the appeal leaflet.

I understand that speculation is one of the joys of being in the "Nat Pres community", but if anyone really wants to know what is happening with 7027 or any of the others in the Waterman Fleet, had you considered asking him? Pete is probably the least secretive man in the preservation movement, and has a Twitter account. His office phone number is on his website. He is not a recluse and not at all self-important.

Pete Waterman indicated that the £1 Million was to cover the 3 locomotives.

Maybe they have their eyes on gathering some "fastest ascent in preservation" times. Trouble will be getting the cylinders to the hills in question.

Does this loco have any kind of timescale at the moment, or is it still kind of in storage?

Yes I am an active volunteer
Maybe some of the money he is getting from his models is to pay the Crewe Heritage Trust for the storage of his various locos and coaches now he no longer has a presence on the site!

Mr Waterman has gone rather quiet. Just over a year ago he was making rather loud noises about the Super D and since last Feb all we've heard is the tumble weeds rattle around. It's a bit of a strange one.

According to SR, Mr Waterman is using the £1m to overhaul the Super D, 5553 & 5224 - Thornbury remains 'low priority' for him.

He has received unsolicited offers for Thornbury but values have been unrealistic, not for sale but if someone makes the right offer etc etc.

I seem to remember seeing a Castle class loco at Buckfastleigh a few years ago I was sure it was Thornbury Castle, could be wrong though, might have been a dream!

Has anyone read Maggy Whitehouse in Steam Railway? I rather like 7027's mention in her article. But wasn't the original plan for 7029 to be used as a high day (whats one of those?) and holiday loco when it went to Buckfastleigh.

The chimney is indeed odd looking, but blowing up the photo and brightening it appears to me to indicate 6'8 sized splashers and outside steam pipes in the right place.

Very much a Castle smokebox however! I'm in no doubt that it is indeed a Castle, but agree with you both that the chimney is rogue!!
