Except that when an A4 has gone past you can see where it's come from and not a thick smoke screen......

57315 now on the back to help. As a passenger, given the problem on the outward run and its likely repeat, the correct thing to do.

The reason for the Doncaster stop was the coal needed to be pulled forward finding somewhere without OHL meant 34067 had to detach and head for the yard.

Report from on board is that there is a box on the back for the return run.

Ok Any theories why there was a large amount of steam sticking only to the port side casing?

This seems to show a similar amount on the starboard side as well! Piston rod packing seems to be letting by a bit.

    A Thingy...
To be honest, the smoke was probably down to atmospheric conditions as the opposite side of the locomotive had the same treatment on the return journey. Bulleids were known to lay smoke-screens to the extent that either the driver or fireman's side had poor visibility for the entire journey. So anyone on the western side towards the front of the train in both directions didn't see much out of the window!

As I was in the rearmost compartment on the return, I can confirm that there was only minimal assistance from the 57 between York and Peterborough, where I disembarked. The only evidence of any assistance was a brief shove from Loversall Carr Junction, as we had been stopped to let an EC service pass before we joined the double-track section to Retford. We experienced a 20-minute delay at the Retford water stop, as the water pump was operating at a low pressure. I also understood that the lack of a water stop south of Connington Loop meant increased assistance later in the trip, although I had bailed-out of the train at Peterborough by then.

All in all, 34067 was on fine form, with some spectacular bouts of sprinting and fine climbs up Stoke Bank in both directions. It just goes to show that Bulleid 'Light Pacifics' really can be 'pocket battleships' when the need arises, particularly when blessed with a sympathetic driver and good mechanical order. 34067 was chattering away at all the right places, to the extent that the locomotive was treating the task at hand in a workmanlike, even dismissive manner. A fine run that was a worthy candidate for my 50th railtour. Now for the 'Tin Bath' today...

I'm really glad that Tangmere had a good first tour out this year. I hope 2015 goes well for her.
