Very interesting, it's good to see how important the PWay / Civils are

 

We don't like to let them realise we know that!

Seriously, having had a little look round a few other Railways accounts, I think we tend to spend more on capital track and structures work than a number of Railways spend on all capital works most years. Hence the importance of the NYMR Foundation (http://www.nymr.co.uk/fundraising/foundation/), which supports Infrastructure as a primary aim.

GWSR must have spent a fair amount on bridges and embankments over the last few years...

Interesting reading, but I'd find blog type layout with words, picture, words picture etc. nicer to read that block of text then block of pictures. I'm sure you know which railway I'd say is good at this...

Latest news from Beck Hole.
All the old timber BH track has now been removed and work is to start this week on digging off the old ash ballast prior to relaying with new FBrail CEN 60.
Is this a first for a heritage railway?
And as you may notice Steel Sleepers are involved but only on the straight itself.
The full length of the straight and further North through Br34 by the PW hut will become CWR.

As is becoming the norm the Flatrol has been renamed as a LOOROL.

I will add detail from today.
3 Heroes started laying out steel sleepers today.

While I go t the easy job of painting the trackbed and working with the digger placing the sleeper packs.

Lunchtime and a retreat to the Shark although we were not lying on our sides.

Days end and the 3 heroes look a little bit done in.
300 plus sleepers laid by hand.
Only another 300 to go.

It's a bit unfair leaving Martyn to deal with his end of the sleeper on his own - or is this the effect of the photographer not being able to be in 2 places at once??

Might sound a silly question, but why has all of last years work been dug up to lower drain less than a inch?
Why wasn't this realised before at the building stage or don't we have the equivalent of House building inspectors on railway construction?

That point was mentioned in the previous update.
At Whitby, CML are having to do some remedial works to part of the new platform as the cross fall from the copes to the back does not quite meet the Group Standard. We could have had a dispensation but Network Rail insisted it had to be corrected, which helps illustrate why our national rail network costs so much.

 

Thanks for that, appears a waste of time and money to be honest.

 

Maybe the contractor will take more note of requirements next time.
Also a point to note for any other line that may need to do platform works in conjunction with NWR in the future.
Thinking of North Norfolk, for one, here if they go to Cromer.

A back fall is a pretty standard requirement on any platform though.
Not for drainage but to stop trolleys falling on the track.

 

Only on new or rebuilt platforms. It was once common to have the fall towards the line to aid drainage and grandfather rights exist in many cases. But not Whitby Platform 2!!
