Does livery up front influence you riding behind it ?

    All joking aside, the A4s never had a splash of red between the buffers, nor did the LMS streamliners IIRC.

    out of interest did any merchant navies have a early BR crest (lion and wheel) after rebuild or did they go straight to the late crest?

    There's a photo in Bradley of 35018 in that form; also 35020 while on test, though that is slightly cheating as it is coupled to a mis-matched high-sided tender with early crest for reasons previously discussed on here.

    No I do not currently volunteer
    Yes, some locomotives carried the cycling lion crest after rebuilding - 35012 for example. So that takes you into 1957 even though I think the crest officially changed over in 1956.

    I can't remember which book I read it in and I can't be arsed to find out, but I didn't make it up. A lot of the Scottish Region engines ran the night sleepers from Perth and Glasgow, so would have been green.
