You would have enjoyed the meal my father cooked for me the other day then: Steak and Kidney pudding, cooked to my grandmother's recipe taught her by the formidable Miss Turnbull at Brighton Technical College before going into domestic service in the 1920s; and using a pudding bowl that goes back at least to my great grandmother who was probably using it from the late nineteenth century. Ideal sustenance after a day on a loco of similar vintage ...

A perfectly good supplier who has his own herd of farmed red deer. Most of his venison goes, AIUI, to the catering trade. He only occasionally has venison at the market. Also at Taunton Farmer's Market is Robert Hawker who I was refering to originally.

West Somerset Railway - Then and Now #103

Leigh Woods Level Crossing Down Distant 1973 / 2017

Thanks to all who helped me track down the location of this entertaining shot by Bob Prance from his 1973 visit.

He and his small charges must have either walked some distance along the closed line from Roebuck Gate Crossing or through the fields to the footpath crossing here. The railings of Roebuck Bridge can just be glimpsed through the undergrowth in the right background.

In 2017 all evidence of the Distant signal has gone, and while the bridge is clearer, the growth of lineside vegetation makes the line of cutting in the left background harder to pick out.

Definitely one to give the modern safety fiends palpitations!
