Whillan Beck has had its first day working ordinary passenger trains today (Tues).

I gather it is likely to be busy from now on so it can accumulate mileage. But anybody wanting to see WB at work is advised to phone the Ratty on the day to check it's running.

My photos from today will follow later.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Lovely to see Whillan Beck out and about- I will endeavour to get up to the line later this year.

@Nigel Day will River Esk have to go though the same acceptance as WB has done when she returns, with all the repacement of parts & details changes you have outlined?

    Many thanks

    Chris

    Thankyou for your reply.

Esk looks lovely, I look forward to seeing her back in service.

Looking superb .... can't wait to find out what those who knew Esk before @Nigel Day's work make of the revitalised loco. I doubt it's looked this good since it left Colchester 95 years ago.

Wonder what Henry Greenly would make of it all?

He'd be most impressed I'm sure, but then ask what on earth is that Caledonian Blue foreigner doing running on this railway?! :p

There are actually plenty of links between Greenly and Roland Martins who designed the Krauss locos. They were certainly in touch with each other. There is a lot of River Esk in the original Krauss design especially if you look at front end.

Eventually their two pacific designs would merge in what became the Canadian locos at Romney. They are essentially a Greenly bottom end with a Krauss boiler on. All restyled by A.L.S.Richardson.

Captain Howey would probably be more objectionable to Black Prince at Romney. He wasn't a huge fan of the Germans and didn't want to buy any Pacific locos off them despite the competitive price.

Wasn't blue the original house livery of the R&E's saviours Narrow Gauge Railways Ltd.? ..... Though I'll grant you a German born bullfighter in full Scottish finery isn't exactly a Bassett-Lowke 'Class 30' .... even when it looks as stunningly beautiful as 'Whillan Beck'. :)

I believe your quite right there, that shade of blue isn't far off from Narrow Gauge Railways Ltd.

But yes ultimately though I don't think Henry Greenly would honestly mind, being an engineer I reckon he'd find looking at someone's else work on 15inch gauge loco design quite fascinating.
