West Somerset Railway General Discussion

Discussion in 'Heritage Railways & Centres in the UK' started by gwr4090, Nov 15, 2007.

Thanks for the feedback, folks. Things do seem to be working OK now following some much appreciated and rapid work by the Railcam.uk team. I understand the recent software upgrade may continue to cause a few probs depending on what operating system and browser is used, until all combinations are tested. Meantime, the player options have been reduced to just two. Hopefully most people will now be able to view the webcams.

BTW still awaiting an update on services today. Snow looks likely to return during the day. Will update front page of wsr.org.uk as soon as news arrives.

If trains do run today, Crowcombe station will be closed as staff cannot get there. (The platforms will be accessible but not cleared of snow, and the building closed)

  7. All trains cancelled for Sunday 18 March.

I'm not surprised. The weather forecast is wrong at the moment. Whilst the snow is forecast it's shown as not settling here and in most of Somerset. We've got over an inch here and it's obviously settling on the webcams. It looks to me as if the trains might be able to run at the moment but the staff and passengers may not be able to get home at the end of the day so it is the correct decision.

    Next year's theme is snowploughs.

In contrast the fairly substantial fall in this part of coastal Hampshire is in gentle retreat and the Havenstreet webcam reveals the IOWSR has been able to operate following a track inspection.(Relatively easy if you only have five route miles!) Quite a few passengers seem to be around.

Llangollen Railway operating normal service today despite three inches of snow overnight. It was still coming down heavily at 9.a.m & I had to walk into Llangollen for our board meeting as I couldn't get my car out.

I'm sure I've seen some at Taunton. Can we hire them in for the spring gala next year?

Even the local buses are running. The snow has been much lighter than the last lot and little drifting.

  16. I understand the snow itself did not prevent the trains from running rather it was a number of other factors that led to the decision to cancel today's trains (my own view gleaned from several discussions this morn with WSR folk on the ground).

I was not intending to be critical of the WSR in any way. I was trying to contrast the police advice not to travel with the fact that the buses were still running. Sorry I did not make that clear.
