Is there any news about any turkish 8f's being imported into the UK for prservation or has this plan died out?

Also are there any plans to import any more 0-6-0 USA yankie tank locomotives into the UK from the former Yugoslavia?:confused1:

Shhh.....we're not supposed to talk about the Middle Eastern 8Fs for fear of compromising any negotiations.

So, there are two secretly numbered 8Fs that have secretly left Turkey to arrive at a secret UK port by their new secret owners. From there they will secretly be moved to a secret site to be secretly renovated.

Does that sum it up at the moment?

Part of the problem is Politics...

anyone recall how 4472 was exported from the San Francisco...and the coach left behind.. and where we would be now if they man responsible hadnt done what he did even as late as the night before to keep the secret ?

23E: is this likely to be the best two of a very run-down bunch, with the intention of restoring both, or could it be that one "runner" is put together from the best bits to hand from the two?

There were potentially six engines in Turkey if my memory of the last thread is correct, but I dont recall whether this included the "preserved" ones.

I would have thought that they both will be as bad as each other. As long as everything is still on them, there should be no reason why they both cannot be restored to working order. They will not be in as bad a condition as the ex-Barry locos, many of which spent 20 years being exposed to sea air and British weather.

You know what it is, with the rise in power of India, China and the emergence of Iran and North Korea the government is using these locos to rebuild the SSR, seriously its true I was told by *insert ridiculous "best mate/cab driver/contact at MOD"*.

So there you go, I'd have you know it that this is a highly secretive operation.

So, given the uncertainty of the Turkish loco numbers and identities, what has OBVIOUSLY happened is that the chaps who run the S*******c R*****e have been challenged to prove that the bloody things still work after decades cooped up in the secret sidings behind B**k***ham P****e (yes the Q***n likes to take a loco round the garden from time to time (see pic) but that is not a sufficient test). So they've taken a couple of 8Fs in perfect condition, removed a few parts; painted some rust on (with advice from an eminent contributor to 'Railway Modeller', who is also ex-MI6 and Foreign Office); and put them on a boat to make the 'Turkey' story look convincing. When they arrive the 'overhaul' of at least one (perhaps with the other as a back-up) will no doubt be completed remarkably quickly.

Miff - I was nice knowing you. Shame you have now had to go into hiding after releasing such highly sensitive information.

By the way, the Q***n photo you linked to isn't Quorn! I'm sure it's somewhere else.

The "Q***n" photo possibly shows HMQ giving her long-time friend, Mr Leopold de Rothschild, his "Annual Exam" at the E****y G*****s R*****y.
I believe he's only 83 whereas HMQ is 84 so she has 'Seniority'! Bit different from the 3 Tonners she helped maintain during WWII.
