Not good news that. If you had tables for 4 booked on both the Golden Expresses I'd be worried for you. B***** I have!!!

Says the trains will run with an alternative locomotive. The 11th is showing 'FULLY BOOKED'. As it was 60163 no doubt for 13. What alternative locomotive could they use? No.9 comes to mind and that's all; and then there's the weather.....

60009 on Shap again would be a sight to witness before it disappears from the mainline. However something out of Crewe may be more likely. 46100 would be regionally appropriate.

I'm booked on the first Golden Express, the one on the anniversary itself. I strongly suspect the steam ban will still be in force so whatever alternative steam loco they find, it will probably not be providing the motive power. It's also worth mentioning what A1SLT mentioned in that post, about no steam currently permitted on the WCML at all, under any conditions. A diesel tour to commemorate 50 years since the end of steam anyone?

I'm booked on the second one, but was planning to be "somewhere" on the S+C for the actual anniversary to photograph the 3 scheduled tours as well. I wouldn't be upset at No.9 or Royal Scot as a replacement, in fact thinking about it, I'd prefer that! But as you say, any steam at all and we'll be lucky, and I can't really see how they're going to sell putting a diesel on the front of this specific tour.

I think it would be fair to say that that pretty much everyone who is a member of this site is praying for a period of sustained rain in the run up to that week...just maybe not on that day though...

It's a tight run thing though because I'm on holiday the week before!

I booked on the second one, on 15th, partly for the sake of going the opposite way round from usual, north on the S&C and south over Shap, partly for the sake of the Upperby curve, and partly with the hope that Tornado would be allowed 90 mph on the WCML. The Ebor Flyer upset kyboshed the third one and it remains to be seen when Tornado will be allowed to run at 90 mph again; anyway not for quite a while. I will still be reasonably content if the train runs with any pure steam, which seems to be the present intention but I'll cancel if a diesel is involved.

I am on the 15th trip for a reverse run on the S&C circuit. Let's see what they come up with. Not many Class 8s available to DBC are there?

Your water company needs to get its act together. Thankfully I just live in the Anglia Water region and the last hosepipe ban I can remember was 1984 and they serve the driest area of the country Down the road it's Thames Water nad they are looking at a hosepipe ban already.

That would mean the end of Show Pony Steam too in the region wouldn't it? Can't see them allowing thousands of gallons of water to be taken from hydrants to fill a tanker and then a tender.

According to our local rag, United Utilities are saying that the temporary ban is for domestic use of hosepipes only. It is not a blanket ban either, the Carlisle area and parts of Eden are apparently exempt from the ban.

A good point on train loading. I think that they could take a coach off the 15th trip to make it manageable for a Class 7 as it's not fully booked, but as you say, not on the 11th.

Of course, to double head both trips would be more in the spirit of the occasion and that would solve the loading problem. A Scot plus a Bulleid from LSL would work......

Or a Scot and the Brit if she's back in one piece by then.

35028 only seems to have a booking for 10th that would conflict with the A1 turns .........
If a class 8 is required up north, maybe 34046 could deputise on the one Belmond job?

Speaking personally. This is a complicated issue but I see no reason why existing commitments should be compromised and Belmond is Belmond as far as Clan Line is concerned, I think.

And if the managers of the work programme of UoSA feel the same way then I wouldn't blame them for saying that the Minehead/Torbay arrangement (18th/19th) works for them and running around up north does not.

In no way was I saying anything "should" happen. Quite obviously the outcome will be one that suits any/all parties.

Whichever loco they find to deputise, there will need to be some changes to watering arrangements. Past experience has shown that even locos with large tenders, such as UoSA and Clan Line, need topping up sooner than Tornado. OTOH, if the fire-risk measures are still in place, and a DL is doing most of the work, the steam loco won't be using as much water as normal.
