Good to see these two ex-LNER giants together again this weekend, even if one of them is static. Too much to hope, I suppose that 60009 will be working one of the service trains?!

Tornado's Easter on the ELR 31 March 2018

The A1 Trust has planned its most vigorous programme ever for 2018, both of mainline tours and visits to heritage railways.

So after nearly eight years A1 Pacific No 60163 Tornado is back at the East Lancashire Railway over the Easter holiday, running an intensive service, prebookable only, with a price premium.

I was on the first service on the Saturday morning. The train was moderately loaded, though later trains were fully booked. Performance on a preserved line will never startle, but with the redoubtable Frank Cronin at the regulator, we stormed up the long climb to Heywood near to line speed all the way with eight Mark 1s.

A great taster for the Ebor Express in two weeks time!

Still think they missed a trick not getting 60009 out and having a trio of LNER pacifics on show, but it was good to see three pacifics (inc 34092), the Crab, an 08 and a 33 on a single day.

First time I've seen 60163 in the flesh, and what an achievement it is. Sounded glorious.

I think that 60009 is having work done on it at the moment so would not be available.
